DU’s SRCC sets up first-of-its-kind start-up incubator for its students

Despite a 100% placement, more and more students of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), one of the top colleges of Delhi University, are taking the plunge into entrepreneurship. To facilitate this trend, SRCC has now set up a one-of-a-kind incubator which will help students in setting up their start-ups.

Dr Abhay Kumar, Faculty advisory at SRCC told The Economic Times that many current students have approached the college with their business ideas wanting some kind of help.

Campus incubators are on the rise world-wide but in Delhi, the SRCC Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship is the first. It was set up in October 2015. Faculty, alumni and industry experts are a part of this centre. Presently, 10 students in their third year of college are getting incubated. Another 15 fresh alumni are also getting mentored and receiving help with their ideas.

Apart from this, SRCC is taking several more steps in this direction. It is encouraging its students to work on their start-ups after their graduation. In case, their venture does not work out, they are given the opportunity to benefit from the college’s placement services after a few years.

This is a promising start to many such incubators. The college is helping students who have good business ideas with fundraising and mentorship. Dr Abhay Kumar told The Economic Times, “For the last few years, we felt that many of our students were leaning towards their own projects despite placements offered by good companies. Some even joined and left many established firms to set up their own ventures. Many current students approached the college with their business ideas and wanted some kind of help. So it was the need of the hour”.

The start-up industry in India is on the rise and with such initiatives, the future of the industry looks encouraging.
