Ratan Tata invests in Singapore-based start-up Crayon Data

Tata Sons chairman emeritus Ratan Tata recently made a personal investment in Singapore-based big data firm, Crayon Data. The amount of the investment was not disclosed. The company claims to be one of Asia’s leading big data companies.

According to their website, the start-up’s main focus is to create solutions that use data to illuminate and simplify people’s lives. Tata made this investment three months after he joined Jungle Ventures as the senior adviser. Jungle Ventures is a Singapore-based venture capitalist firm that has already invested in Crayon Data.

“We are excited and honoured. To meet Ratan Tata and have our vision validated by him is an accolade in itself,” Srikant Sastri, co-founder of Crayon Data told The Economic Times.

The events that led to the formation of the company are inspirational. Two friends of over 30 years and IIM-Calcutta graduates Sastri and Suresh Shankar recognised that people around the world have many options but still need the relevant options and guidance to make the right and satisfactory choices. Thus they co-founded the company. They have also raised $10 million in funding from Jungle Ventures and Spring Seeds so far.

The company has offices in New York, Dubai, Chennai, Singapore and London.
