Jayalalithaa acquitted – Twitter enraged

Fresh from Salman Khan’s shocking hit-and-run case suspension, India’s law and order system is back in the limelight for acquitting former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case. The Karnataka High Court gave its statement today which will make her eligible to return back as the head of Tamil Nadu government.

She was charged with accumulating a staggering sum of Rs. 66.65 crore in wealth that was clearly disproportionate to her known sources of income from 1991-96 – the period where she served her first term as the CM.

Following the acquaintance, Jayalalithaa’s supporters erupted in joy, distributed sweets and lit fireworks in celebration of their beloved Amma’s freedom and return to governance. However, Twitterati had a different opinion. Countless Twitter users blasted the Indian courts and reflected on how the rich and influential can get away with even the most heinous crimes in India.

Although Jayalalitha had been forced to quit as chief minister of the southern state, her return is now seen as a formality as she continued to control her party while on bail awaiting the outcome of the appeal.

The 67-year-old enjoys huge popularity in Tamil Nadu and ministers have been known to prostrate themselves before her.
