Two local skiers have constructed what is being called India’s first ‘igloo’ in Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 3,000 m close to Hampta Pass – overlooking a picturesque tourist resort.

The igloo, built by Vikas Kumar and Tashi Dorjee, has a ceiling height of nine feet and accommodates a table and chair and a bed made from snow too.

Initially, the duo had built an igloo near their house in Manali, about two years ago. However, owing to flaws in construction it melted in just a few days. The current igloo is constructed about 12 kms uphill from Manali in Sethan Village – an area known for its apples.

While it is not being promoted commercially, people visiting the village are being allowed to stay for a day. According to Vikas, when the temperature is minus 10 degrees outside, the inside remains at a ‘cozy’ zero degrees. Given that the area where the igloo is set up reportedly has more than three feet of snow, Vikas says that he is hopeful it will not thaw till March-end.

Vikas and his partner Tashi claim they learned how to construct the igloo by watching techniques on YouTube. Check out the video of India’s first igloo:
