Former first lady Jill Biden’s ex-husband, William “Bill” Stevenson, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, following a weeks-long investigation by Delaware authorities. Grand Jury Indictment After Weeks-Long Investigation

Police in New Castle County, Delaware, announced Tuesday that a grand jury indicted the 77-year-old Stevenson on a charge of first-degree murder. The indictment alleges that he “did intentionally cause the death” of his wife, Linda Stevenson, who was 64 at the time of her death.

Detectives took Stevenson into custody at his home without incident. He has since been arraigned and is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after failing to post $500,000 cash bail. Authorities have not said whether Stevenson has retained legal counsel.

According to police, officers responded to a reported domestic dispute at the Stevensons’ home in the Oak Hill community near Wilmington shortly after 11 p.m. on Dec. 28. Linda Stevenson was found unresponsive on the living room floor when officers arrived. Police said her husband had called 911.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures, but Linda Stevenson was later pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives from the New Castle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit took over the case soon after. Officials have not released further details about the cause or manner of death, citing the ongoing investigation.

Who Was Linda Stevenson?

Linda Stevenson was remembered by family and friends as deeply devoted to her loved ones. According to her obituary, she ran a bookkeeping business in recent years and was known for forming close friendships with her clients. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter and granddaughter and cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles.

Her obituary described her as “tenacious, kind-hearted, and fiercely loyal,” adding that her absence would be felt deeply by all who knew her. The obituary did not mention her husband.

William Stevenson’s Past and Biden Connection

William Stevenson is a longtime Delaware businessman who founded a popular bar and music venue in Newark in the early 1970s. He was married to Jill Biden from 1970 until their divorce in 1975. Jill Biden later married Joe Biden in 1977, two years after the divorce.

In her 2019 memoir, Jill Biden reflected on the relationship as a “mistake of youth,” while acknowledging that she once believed the marriage was meant to last. The Biden post-presidential office has declined to comment on Stevenson’s arrest and the charges against him.
