Max Verstappen has finally put an end to one of Formula 1’s biggest driver-market dramas, signing a new contract with Red Bull Racing that will keep the four-time world champion at the team through the end of 2030.
The blockbuster announcement comes after months of speculation linking Max Verstappen with potential moves to Mercedes or McLaren. Although his previous Red Bull contract ran until 2028, performance-related clauses reportedly gave him opportunities to leave earlier.
For now, however, Max Verstappen has chosen loyalty over a fresh start and made a major statement about his faith in Red Bull’s future.
“I am really pleased with the contract extension,” Verstappen said. “We have the best people, and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.”
Red Bull’s Biggest Gamble Yet
The timing of the announcement is significant. Red Bull Racing has struggled to match its previous dominance since Formula 1 introduced sweeping new car and power-unit regulations in 2026.
Max Verstappen has managed just two second-place finishes this season, in Austria and Hungary, despite coming within two points of Lando Norris for the 2025 world championship.
The Dutchman has also been unusually vocal about his frustrations with the new generation of Formula 1 cars and engines. The increased emphasis on energy management has clashed with Verstappen’s preference for aggressive, pure racing.
Yet his decision to remain suggests he believes Red Bull can turn its fortunes around.
Verstappen Backs Laurent Mekies
A crucial factor appears to be Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies, who took over followingChristian Horner’s departure.
Max Verstappen praised Laurent Mekies’ direction, saying he sees a “clear vision” for the future and believes the entire Milton Keynes operation remains committed to rebuilding the team.
“Everyone in Milton Keynes believes in what we are building,” Max Verstappen said.
For Laurent Mekies, keeping Verstappen is arguably the biggest vote of confidence of his Red Bull tenure.
“Having Max continue with us and retaining the best driver on the grid is fantastic news,” Mekies said, describing the partnership as one of Formula 1’s greatest success stories.
71 Wins and Four World Titles
Max Verstappen joined Red Bull’s junior team in 2015 before being promoted to the senior squad after just four races of the 2016 season.
He immediately won his first race with Red Bull and has since transformed himself into one of the most successful drivers in F1 history.
The 28-year-old now has 71 Grand Prix victories and four world championships, putting him third on the all-time wins list behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.
His latest contract means Red Bull’s biggest star will remain at the center of the team’s rebuilding project for years to come.

The F1 Driver Market Just Changed
