James Talarico Stuns Republicans, Flips Texas Senate Seat for Democrats After 38 Years
The Texas Senate contest became one of the most expensive congressional races in American history, with spending estimates exceeding $500 million. Paxton benefited from substantial Republican support, including financial backing from billionaire Elon Musk. Reports indicated that Musk contributed approximately $158 million to a super PAC supporting the Republican campaign.
Democrat James Talarico has pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 US midterm elections, defeating Donald Trump-backed Ken Paxton and ending nearly four decades of Republican dominance in Texas Senate races.
Texas has delivered a political earthquake. Democrat James Talarico has defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the state’s US Senate election, securing a historic victory that breaks his party’s 38-year drought and deals a major blow to Donald Trump and the Republican establishment.
The result marks the first time a Democrat has won a US Senate seat in Texas since Lloyd Bentsen’s victory in 1988. It also marks the first Democratic win in a statewide Texas election since 1994, signaling a dramatic shift in a state long considered one of America’s strongest Republican bastions.
James Talarico’s victory is part of a much wider Democratic surge across the country. Democrats have taken control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterms, leaving Trump facing a much tougher final two years in the White House.
‘We Just Took Back Texas’: Talarico Celebrates Historic Upset
Supporters erupted in celebration at Talarico’s election-night gathering in Austin after major news networks projected him as the winner. The 37-year-old Democrat, a former middle-school teacher and Texas state representative, took the stage to thunderous applause.
“We just took back Texas,” he declared.
Talarico also took aim at the enormous financial resources deployed against his campaign, telling supporters that wealth and political influence could not overpower ordinary voters.
He framed the result as a victory for people who had felt ignored by the political establishment, invoking the biblical story of David and Goliath. His campaign had repeatedly used religious language, reflecting his background as a Presbyterian seminarian and the grandson of a Southern Baptist preacher.

Elon Musk’s Money Could Not Save Ken Paxton
The Texas Senate contest became one of the most expensive congressional races in American history, with spending estimates exceeding $500 million.
Paxton benefited from substantial Republican support, including financial backing from billionaire Elon Musk. Reports indicated that Musk contributed approximately $158 million to a super PAC supporting the Republican campaign.
Talarico made billionaire influence a central target of his campaign, arguing that wealthy donors should not be able to buy political power. His message appeared to resonate with voters concerned about the growing cost of living and the influence of big money in Washington.
The Republican campaign, meanwhile, attempted to portray Talarico as too progressive for Texas. Attack advertisements focused on his positions on transgender rights, religious beliefs, and social issues. Trump also repeatedly campaigned for Paxton, underlining the national importance Republicans attached to holding the seat.
Paxton’s Controversies Become a Political Liability
Paxton entered the election with a lengthy record of political and legal controversies.
In 2023, the Republican-controlled Texas House impeached him over allegations involving corruption and abuse of office. The Texas Senate subsequently acquitted him.
His legal troubles also included securities fraud allegations, which were resolved through an agreement involving restitution, community service and ethics training. Paxton denied wrongdoing.
His Republican primary victory over longtime Senator John Cornyn had already exposed divisions within the party. Some Republican figures viewed Cornyn as a stronger general-election candidate, but Trump’s endorsement helped Paxton secure the nomination.
Cost of Living and Immigration Drive Voter Backlash
Talarico built his campaign around affordability, public education, corruption, and the need for political unity.
Economic frustration was a major issue. Rising consumer prices, petrol costs, and concerns about Trump’s tariff policies and the war involving Iran contributed to dissatisfaction among voters.
Immigration policy also emerged as a significant factor. Hispanic voters, who represent a substantial share of Texas’s population, expressed concerns about aggressive enforcement measures and the treatment of immigrant communities.
Democrats sought to turn that frustration into electoral momentum, particularly among voters who had supported Trump in 2024 but were increasingly unhappy with his administration.
Texas Election Results Could Reshape American Politics
Talarico’s win came alongside another stunning Democratic breakthrough: state representative Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott to become Texas’s first Latina governor and the first Democrat to hold the office since 1994.
Together, the victories represent a remarkable reversal in a state Republicans have dominated for decades.
For Democrats, Texas is no longer simply a long-term electoral ambition. The results show the party can compete and win statewide by focusing on economic concerns, political accountability, and voter mobilization.
For Trump and Republicans, the message is far more uncomfortable. Losing Texas’s Senate seat and the governor’s office, alongside control of Congress, turns the 2026 midterms into a major political reckoning.
Talarico’s victory may therefore prove bigger than one Senate race. It has challenged the assumption that Texas is permanently Republican and given Democrats a historic opening in the country’s second-most-populous state.
