Hideo Kojima’s ‘Physint’ Makes Stunning Switch From PlayStation to Xbox

Xbox has historically struggled to match PlayStation’s strength in Japan and parts of Asia. A deeper relationship with one of Japan’s most internationally recognized game creators could give Microsoft a valuable creative connection in those markets.

Hideo Kojima’s next big action-espionage game has taken a dramatic turn, with ‘Physint’ moving from PlayStation to Xbox after Sony reportedly pulled out of the project.

The surprise development marks a major shift for one of the video game industry’s most closely watched creators. Kojima Productions has confirmed that Xbox will now publish Physint, expanding its relationship with Kojima beyond the upcoming horror title OD.

Even more significantly, Xbox and Kojima Productions say their partnership will extend into film and television, potentially transforming the relationship from a traditional game-publishing deal into a much broader entertainment collaboration.

PlayStation Walked Away From ‘Physint’

Physint was originally planned as a PlayStation project, continuing Kojima’s long-running relationship with Sony.

That relationship dates back decades and includes the Metal Gear franchise’s history on PlayStation as well as the Death Stranding series.

However, Hideo Kojima revealed that PlayStation Studios informed Kojima Productions in mid-June that it would cancel the project.

The legendary developer said he was determined to keep Physint alive and spent the following three months searching for another partner.

That search ultimately led him back to Xbox.

“PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS,” Kojima said in a statement. He confirmed that development is continuing and described the game as a “genre-defining action-espionage title.”

Xbox Lands Kojima’s Major PlayStation Project

For Microsoft, the deal is a huge creative win.

Xbox is already working with Kojima Productions on OD, an experimental horror game being developed with filmmaker Jordan Peele. That project does not yet have a release date.

Physint now becomes the next major Kojima Productions project tied to Xbox.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was honored that Kojima had chosen Xbox as its partner.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life,” Asha Sharma said, adding that Kojima’s desire to challenge conventions reflects the creativity Xbox wants to support.

Kojima also stressed that the expanded partnership goes beyond OD.

Kojima and Xbox Are Going Beyond Video Games

The biggest surprise may not actually be Physint moving to Xbox.

Xbox and Kojima Productions have announced plans to collaborate across film and television, opening the door to new Kojima-related stories outside traditional video games.

Specific film and TV projects have not been revealed yet.

However, Kojima has increasingly embraced transmedia storytelling. His Death Stranding franchise is already being developed for film, with A24 attached to the adaptation.

The creator has previously spoken about the shrinking technological gap between games and movies, arguing that modern filmmaking and game development increasingly share digital tools, virtual environments and performance-capture technology.

Why the Xbox Deal Is a Big Deal for Microsoft

Kojima’s move could have implications beyond one game.

Xbox has historically struggled to match PlayStation’s strength in Japan and parts of Asia. A deeper relationship with one of Japan’s most internationally recognized game creators could give Microsoft a valuable creative connection in those markets.

It also reinforces Xbox’s increasingly broad approach to publishing, partnerships and entertainment.

Rather than simply competing for exclusive games, Microsoft appears increasingly interested in working with major creators across platforms and media.

Sony Says Relationship With Kojima Remains Strong

Despite the Physint cancellation, PlayStation has stressed that the split on the project does not mean its relationship with Kojima is over.

Sony said it continues to have “great admiration” for Kojima’s vision and described its relationship with the developer and his independent studio as strong after decades of creative cooperation.

That leaves the door open for future PlayStation-Kojima projects, although Physint is now firmly moving forward under Xbox.

When Will ‘Physint’ Release?

There is no confirmed release date for Physint yet.

Kojima has confirmed that development is continuing, but details about its platforms, gameplay, story, and launch window remain limited.

The project is expected to follow OD, meaning Kojima fans may have a significant wait before Physint finally arrives.

But one thing is already clear: Kojima’s next action-espionage game is no longer a PlayStation story. Xbox has stepped in, and the partnership could become much bigger than gaming.
