Twitter launches crypto division to explore bitcoin, blockchains uses

Micro-blogging site Twitter is building a dedicated crypto division called Twitter Crypto. The social media giant has hired Tess Rinearson as the team’s engineering lead who will “set the strategy for the future of crypto at (and on) Twitter”. In a series of Tweets, Rinearson shared details about the new team and said it will focus on crypto, blockchains, Bitcoin tipping, NFTs, and other decentralised technologies.

“First, we’ll be exploring how we can support the growing interest among creators to use decentralized apps to manage virtual goods and currencies, and to support their work and communities,” Rinearson said on Twitter.

“Looking farther ahead, we’ll be exploring how ideas from crypto communities can help us push the boundaries of what’s possible with identity, community, ownership and more.” She added.

Rinearson will report to Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal, and their to-be-hired team will help drive Twitter’s push toward decentralizing social media.

The roll out is seen as company’s latest push towards embracing embrace digital assets and decentralised apps and the ballooning communities around them. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, a well-known bitcoin enthusiast, has long said he wants to integrate digital assets into Twitter’s future.

In September, Twitter introduced a new tool that will allow users to make payments in bitcoin and ethereum on its platform. The social media platform had unveiled a tip jar feature earlier this year, allowing users to tip influencers for their tweet. So far, Twitter has allowed users to add payment modes like Razorpay, PayPal and others to their accounts.
