Bitget Challenges Crypto Exchange Model With New Open Custody Network for Institutional Trading

Crypto exchange giant Bitget is making a major move to change how institutions trade digital assets, unveiling a new network that separates asset custody from exchange execution. Its Open Custody Network (OCN) lets eligible users access Bitget’s trading infrastructure without transferring their underlying assets directly into the exchange’s custody.

The initiative targets a longstanding concern in the cryptocurrency industry: the concentration of custody and trading operations within a single platform. Under the conventional centralized exchange model, users generally deposit assets with an exchange before trading, creating dependence on the same venue for both storage and execution.

Bitget says its new network aims to offer an alternative by connecting banks and institutional-grade custodians with its trading infrastructure.

Bitget Open Custody Network Separates Storage From Trading

The Open Custody Network, or OCN, connects independent custody providers with Bitget’s spot, margin and futures markets through an asset-mirroring mechanism.

This arrangement is intended to let eligible traders keep custody of their assets with a participating external provider while accessing trading opportunities on Bitget. Rather than requiring the exchange to hold the underlying assets directly, the network links externally held assets to trading activity.

The approach could be particularly relevant for institutions that need to maintain independent custody arrangements while participating in active cryptocurrency markets.

Asset managers, market makers and other institutional participants often face operational and risk-management requirements that make concentrating funds with a single exchange less desirable. OCN gives these participants greater flexibility without disconnecting them from exchange liquidity.

Why Crypto Institutions Are Looking Beyond Exchange Custody

Custody has become central to institutional participation in digital assets. Traditional exchange arrangements can require institutions to move funds away from their preferred custodians before executing trades.

That process can introduce additional operational complexity and concentrate counterparty exposure.

Bitget’s new network seeks to address this structural limitation by allowing custody and trading to operate through connected but separate providers. The company says the model combines independent custody, institutional-grade security arrangements, integrated trading access, and capital efficiency.

For institutions managing multiple strategies, the ability to deploy externally held assets across trading activity could offer more flexibility in capital management.

However, the actual level of protection and operational efficiency will depend on the participating custodians, the network’s implementation and the terms under which individual users access the service.

‘Assets in Bank, Trading on Bitget’

Bitget CEO Gracy Chen described OCN as an effort to challenge the assumption that traders must place their assets under an exchange’s custody to use its markets.

“Our proposition, ‘Assets in Bank, Tradings on Bitget.’, puts custody choice at the centre of that approach,” Chen said.

She added that the network is intended to give users access to Bitget’s liquidity and capital efficiency while lowering barriers to participation.

The launch reflects a broader industry push towards infrastructure that separates asset safekeeping from trading execution. For institutions, this distinction can matter when managing custody policies, operational controls, and counterparty exposure.

What Bitget OCN Could Mean for Institutional Crypto Trading

The network’s initial proposition centers on connecting participating banks and institutional-grade custodians with Bitget’s existing trading ecosystem.

If a wider range of institutional participants adopt it, the model could offer an alternative to conventional exchange-based custody arrangements. It may also help market makers and asset managers use capital held with external providers more efficiently.

However, OCN is not a blanket guarantee against custody or trading risks. Users will still need to assess participating providers, eligibility requirements, operational arrangements and the risks associated with spot, margin and futures trading.

With the launch, Bitget is positioning custody flexibility as a key part of its Universal Exchange strategy. The company’s longer-term challenge will be demonstrating that independent custody and integrated exchange liquidity can work together at institutional scale.
