Florence Pugh Speaks Out on Cornell Sexual Assault Case: ‘We Need Our Men to Be Horrified’
Florence Pugh has spoken out forcefully over allegations involving a former Cornell University student, calling for greater accountability and urging men to take a more active role in confronting sexual violence.
The actor shared a lengthy statement on Instagram Sunday after a former Cornell University student filed a civil lawsuit alleging that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple members of the Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024.
Pugh said she felt “uneasy and sick and anxious” after reading about the case and argued that men must help lead conversations about preventing sexual violence and challenging what she described as a culture of silence.

In her statement, Florence Pugh said the allegations represented an opportunity for men to confront the behavior and attitudes that can enable sexual violence.
“This is really the moment where we need our men to be as horrified and as sickened as us,” Pugh wrote, urging men to lead discussions about how society responds to sexual assault and complicity.
She also expressed concern about people who may have known about the alleged incident but failed to intervene.
Pugh directly addressed the former student at the center of the lawsuit, describing her as courageous and offering support during what she characterized as a difficult healing process.
Her comments quickly drew attention online, adding a major Hollywood voice to the public discussion surrounding the Cornell case.

What the Cornell Lawsuit Alleges
The lawsuit was filed in New York on September 16 by a former Cornell student identified as Jane Doe. According to the complaint, she was 20 when the alleged incident occurred at the Chi Phi fraternity house in Ithaca.
The complaint alleges that Doe had consumed alcohol before arriving at the fraternity house and was subsequently given additional alcohol and a substance she was told was ketamine. It further alleges that she was sexually assaulted by multiple fraternity members over several hours.
The lawsuit also includes an image of a Snapchat group conversation that the plaintiff says shows one fraternity member encouraging others to come upstairs.
These are allegations contained in a civil complaint and have not been established in criminal court. None of the seven fraternity members named in the lawsuit has been criminally charged in connection with the allegations.
An attorney for one of the accused men has denied his client’s wrongdoing.
Cornell Responds to the Allegations
The university has said its Office of Civil Rights and Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards investigated and adjudicated the allegations under university policies.
Cornell University said the Xi chapter of Chi Phi remains barred from campus and emphasized that federal privacy laws prevent it from publicly disclosing individual students’ disciplinary records.
Cornell has also disputed claims that students received only minimal consequences, saying sanctions included suspensions and expulsions.
The university has said it takes sexual violence seriously and intends to address the matter through the legal process.
Criminal Investigation Reopened
The controversy has also prompted renewed attention from prosecutors.
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten has said his office intends to present the case to a grand jury after reviewing information contained in the civil lawsuit. He said the allegations in the complaint differed significantly from what was reported to police during the original investigation.
Doe’s attorney has disputed that characterization and criticized how police handled the initial investigation.
The renewed investigation means the criminal allegations remain an active matter, with prosecutors examining whether additional evidence could change the earlier assessment.
Pugh Says the Conversation Cannot Stop
Pugh’s intervention has brought renewed celebrity attention to a case already generating debate about sexual violence, university discipline and institutional responsibility.
She concluded her statement with a broader call for women to feel safe and for society to take sexual violence seriously.
Her comments have also sparked discussion about how men, universities and institutions respond when allegations of sexual assault emerge.
As the lawsuit and renewed criminal investigation move forward, the allegations remain contested, while the legal process will determine what facts can ultimately be established.
