Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s Hebrew X Account Suspended

The Hebrew-language social media account of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on platform X (formerly Twitter) was recently suspended following just two posts. The account, aimed at Israeli audiences, posted strong language regarding Israel’s military actions and strategic stance towards Iran, sparking renewed online tension between the two nations. The account suspension came soon after Khamenei’s latest post on Sunday, which warned Israel about its “miscalculations” regarding Iran’s strength, intentions, and national resolve. This message came on the heels of escalating military strikes between Israel and Iran.

Ayatollah  Khamenei’s first Hebrew post on Saturday was a simple religious invocation, saying, “In the name of Allah, the merciful.” By Sunday, the tone of the messaging shifted as Khamenei’s second post directly addressed Israel, stating that the “Zionist regime” made a critical error in its calculations about Iran. The post added that Israel would soon “understand the power, ability, initiative, and determination of the Iranian people.”

Khamenei’s Hebrew posts appeared shortly after Israel’s intensified airstrikes on Iranian military sites over the past week, marking another spike in regional tensions. Israel’s attacks reportedly targeted missile facilities and air defence sites across Iran’s Khuzestan, Ilam, and Tehran provinces, resulting in the deaths of two Iranian soldiers. In response to the attacks, Iran’s Supreme Leader emphasized the need for Iran not to understate or exaggerate Israel’s airstrike impact. On Sunday, he stated that Israel’s strikes, while significant, should not be overplayed to avoid empowering Israel’s efforts to intimidate Iran, according to his official website. However, he highlighted that Israel’s recent actions showcased a “miscalculation” of Iran’s military capabilities and the commitment of its people.

The account suspension comes amid ongoing verbal sparring between the two countries. Ayatollah Khamenei’s main X account, which posts in multiple languages, including Hebrew, has often used pointed language to denounce Israel and bolster Iran’s stance on its regional power and military resilience. The now-suspended Hebrew account marked an unusual step, as it directly addressed Israeli audiences. This move underscores Iran’s efforts to shape international perception in ways that extend beyond diplomatic channels.

Social media reactions to the suspension varied widely. Supporters of Israel expressed relief over the suspension, while others questioned the move, suggesting it underscored the influence of governmental pressure on social media censorship.

Khamenei’s suspension has highlighted the role social media continues to play as a theatre for geopolitical discourse. In an increasingly interconnected world, platforms like X offer global leaders a direct line to foreign audiences, albeit one that can be swiftly curtailed when deemed necessary by platform policies. With each post, statement, and suspension, the boundary between traditional statecraft and digital strategy grows ever thinner as states increasingly use online platforms to exert influence and voice political positions in real-time.
