Christian Horner Sparks Ferrari Storm as Frederic Vasseur Hits Back: ‘He’s Looking for a Job’
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has hit back at the growing Christian Horner speculation, accusing the former Red Bull boss of becoming a distraction as Ferrari fights to salvage its 2026 Formula 1 season.
The tension erupted after the Azerbaijan GP, where Ferrari finished fourth and sixth with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, respectively. The result came amid renewed questions about Vasseur’s future after Horner declared Ferrari his dream Formula 1 destination.
Christian Horner, who was removed as Red Bull team principal in July 2025, recently told The Times that Ferrari was the only F1 team he would consider joining without receiving an ownership stake. He described the Maranello outfit as the “dream” and a “sleeping giant.”
Those comments have intensified speculation around Ferrari’s leadership, something Fred Vasseur clearly wants to move away from.
Vasseur: ‘Mr Horner Is Looking for a Job’
Speaking after the Azerbaijan GP, Fred Vasseur said the constant discussion surrounding Christian Horner was affecting the team.
“We are not working in the perfect serenity,” Vasseur said, according to reports from Baku. “For me first, but for everybody in the team, for the media, for 50% of the questions to be about this, it’s a bit of a frustrating situation.”
Vasseur then delivered the sharpest line of his response.
“Mr Horner is looking for a job — that everybody knows — everywhere.”
Asked whether the remark was a joke, Fred Vasseur made his position clear: “I was very serious.”
The Ferrari boss was then asked whether he would consider working alongside Horner.
His answer was deliberately cryptic: “This you have to ask my assistant.”
Ferrari Wants the Spotlight Back on Racing
Vasseur’s frustration comes as Ferrari attempts to remain competitive under the new 2026 regulations.
Charles Leclerc qualified on the front row in Baku but slipped to fourth during the race, while Lewis Hamilton finished sixth. Vasseur pointed to Ferrari’s power-unit deficit as a major problem on Baku’s long straights.
The team principal said Ferrari could lose roughly one position per lap because of its engine situation, making the result particularly difficult despite the car’s strengths through the corners.
That has added pressure to a Ferrari project that began the season with expectations of a serious championship challenge.
Instead, the team has increasingly found itself fighting for second place while Mercedes has established a stronger position at the front.
Hamilton Backs Vasseur
Amid the speculation, Lewis Hamilton offered a notably brief response when asked whether he believed Ferrari remained on the right path under Vasseur.
The seven-time world champion simply answered: “Yes.”
Lewis Hamilton’s support is significant because Fred Vasseur played an important role in his decision to join Ferrari after working with the Briton earlier in his career.
Vasseur, meanwhile, insisted that his commitment to Ferrari remains unchanged.
“Motorsport is my life, it’s my business,” he said. “I’m trying to do my best. I’m there to do my job. I have the best job in the world.”
He added that Ferrari still had seven races remaining and promised to continue pushing “until the last corner.”
Why Christian Horner’s Name Won’t Go Away
Horner remains one of the most successful team principals in modern F1, having overseen Red Bull during its championship-winning era.
Since leaving Red Bull, speculation about his next move has continued. His latest comments have now directly linked him with Ferrari, creating an awkward backdrop for Vasseur.
Former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has argued that Horner’s record means teams have to consider his availability, while also acknowledging that Ferrari is an exceptionally demanding environment.
However, Ferrari has not announced plans to replace Vasseur, and Horner has not secured a role at the Italian team. The story remains speculation, driven by Horner’s public comments and questions about Ferrari’s leadership.
For Vasseur, though, the message is unmistakable: he wants the conversation to return to Ferrari’s performance rather than Horner’s ambitions.
With seven races still on the 2026 calendar, the Ferrari boss now faces the task of blocking out the noise while trying to close the performance gap that matters most.
