Esteban Ocon Admits He Is a Free Agent as Haas Future Hangs in Balance

Esteban Ocon has confirmed he is currently a free agent for the 2027 Formula 1 season, refocusing attention on the Frenchman’s uncertain future with Haas.

Ocon made the admission ahead of the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, saying discussions about his next move are ongoing as the Formula 1 driver market begins to take shape.

The 30-year-old joined Haas for the 2025 season after leaving Alpine and has now spent a decade competing in F1. But despite his experience, his 2027 position at Haas remains unresolved.

Ocon: “Definitely a Free Agent”

Speaking in Baku, Esteban Ocon said he currently has no confirmed seat for next season while discussions continue behind the scenes.

“At the moment I’m definitely a free agent for next year,” Ocon said.

He added that some of the issues surrounding his future were beyond his control and that his immediate priority was delivering results for Haas.

The comments provide the clearest indication yet that Haas has not committed to retaining its experienced driver for another season.

Ocon has also made it clear that he has no intention of stepping away from Formula 1. Asked whether he had considered racing outside the championship, he replied that every option he’s considering remains within F1.

“I’ve got a lot more to give to this sport,” Ocon said.

Haas Driver Decision Under the Spotlight

Esteban Ocon’s future comes against a difficult 2026 campaign for Haas.

He has scored just three points so far this season, while teammate Ollie Bearman has 18, including a fifth-place finish in China. However, Haas’ performance has declined after its strong opening stretch, with the team struggling to consistently extract pace from both cars.

The points gap does not tell the whole story. Ocon and Bearman have both previously highlighted inconsistencies with the VF-26, including changes in balance and performance between sessions and races.

Esteban Ocon has argued that his own performances have remained strong despite the car’s problems.

The Frenchman scored points in Japan and Monaco, with his ninth-place finish in Monaco currently the most recent top-10 result for a Haas driver.

Ollie Bearman Expects to Stay

While Ocon’s future remains uncertain, Ollie Bearman sounded considerably more confident about his prospects.

The British driver said he is prepared to remain with Haas in 2027 and believes that is ultimately what will happen.

Bearman has developed a long relationship with the team, having made his F1 debut with Haas toward the end of 2023 before joining its full-time lineup.

“I really love the trajectory we’re on,” Ollie Bearman said, while acknowledging that Haas has experienced a difficult spell recently.

His strong performances and Ferrari connection have made him an important part of Haas’ long-term plans, adding another layer of uncertainty around Ocon.

Ocon Wants More From His F1 Career

Despite approaching 200 Grand Prix starts, Ocon insists he is not satisfied with what he has achieved.

His F1 career includes a victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with Alpine and three additional podium finishes.

But Ocon believes there is unfinished business.

“Having won one race and being a couple of times on the podium doesn’t satisfy me,” he said.

“When I see some of my colleagues that I’ve been racing with, they are all winning races, being on pole, and that’s where I want to be as well.”

What Happens Next for Ocon?

Ocon’s Haas exit has been widely discussed, although no official announcement has been made.

Haas has reportedly evaluated alternative drivers through its private testing program, with Ferrari-backed Rafael Camara among the names linked to the seat.

For Ocon, the priority is therefore clear: remain in Formula 1 and find an opportunity that can eventually put him back into contention for victories and podiums.

With the 2027 driver market still developing, his statement in Baku confirms one thing: Esteban Ocon’s next Formula 1 chapter remains unwritten.
