There are cafes and then are cafés. We have made a list of some of the coolest cafés that we have come across during our wanderings across the country. What makes them special? No, it’s not the food but the ambience that makes them stand out in the crowd.

Cafe 79 (New Delhi)

Minimalistic in its aesthetic appeal, Cafe 79 is a cosy little space which features some of the latest music acts in and around town. This art cafe has one wall painted bright orange keeping in tone with the vibrancy of the ambience. The walls are adorned with photo-art, abstract wall hangings, posters and what not! You will feel like it’s your own living room. The fact that it is a small space only works in its favour. Time here becomes more personal as all the tables and chairs are huddled in an around the corner set for the live bands.

Lala’s Art Cafe (Leh)

Not your typical urban contemporary art-themed cafe but it’s one which is strongly bound with years of historic affluence and truly raw and real in its vibe just like everything that makes Leh so special. You walk into a narrow stone staircase which leads you to the first floor with gazebo seating typical of a traditional Ladakhi home. A trap door takes you to the terrace which is dotted with low level seating and some books, the Leh Palace touching the skyline can be seen right behind this isolated cafe. They serve a variety of teas and Ladakhi food and snacks. The ground floor is a windowless chamber with five stone images of Buddha lit by lamps.

Kashi Art Cafe (Kochin)

This creatively designed café is nestled in Fort Kochi and was established in 1997. An open terraced garden which reflects the tropical environment is just as open, clean and casual as the energy the owners try to create in the café. More than a place you would go to eat, this is a joint where you come to meet  -meet people, meet new art and in all probability meet the artist . The art gallery has a separate section which boasts of the works of local artist as well as those from all over India. Strictly serving fresh juices and coffee made from freshly ground beans and some snacks, this one place you wouldn’t want to miss a visit to if you are in Kochi.

Samovar Art Café (Mumbai)

The Samovar Art Café sits inside the famous Jehangir Art Gallery. For over forty years the walls of this place have been a canvas to artists who have painted and autographed them. The food served is what you will get on the streets of the city. This narrow cafe is reflective of Mumbai’s multi-cultural Bohemian vibe.

Indian Art Cafe (Hyderabad)

Located in the Inorbit Mall in HitechCity, this restaurant has a beautiful view of the lake which can be enjoyed from the indoor as well as outdoor section. The interiors are done up with modern contemporary artworks, sculptures and furniture to satiate a patrons craving for art and South Indian cuisine. The food offered has a quirky twist to the typical south Indian delights. The owners set up the cafe based on an art form created by them called Khach.
