Trump’s $45,000 Cash Gifts to Aides Spark Ethics Storm at White House

Donald Trump handed out tens of thousands of dollars in cash holiday gifts to some of his closest White House aides, like Natalie Harp, according to newly released financial disclosures, with three senior staffers each receiving $45,000.

The disclosures have triggered an immediate ethics debate because the recipients are federal employees, whose compensation is generally governed by strict rules limiting payments beyond their official government salaries.

Trump’s White House, however, insists there was nothing improper about the gifts.

Natalie Harp Received $45,000 Cash Gift

Among the biggest recipients was Natalie Harp, one of Trump’s most visible and trusted aides.

Harp received a $45,000 cash holiday gift, according to her financial disclosure. Communications adviser Margo Martin and deputy director of Oval Office operations Chamberlain Harris received the same amount.

A fourth aide, Walt Nauta, received $20,000.

The figures are striking when compared with the recipients’ government salaries. Natalie Harp, Margo Martin, and Chamberlain Harris each earn approximately $150,000 a year, meaning the $45,000 gifts amounted to about 30% of their annual salaries.

Walt Nauta earns $175,000 annually, making his reported gift about 11.4% of his salary.

White House Says Gifts Were Legal

The controversy centers on whether personal gifts from a president to government employees can create an ethics problem.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle defended the payments, saying Trump has a longstanding practice of giving Christmas gifts to people around him, including employees and aides.

The White House maintains that the gifts were unrelated to the recipients’ official responsibilities and therefore permissible under applicable legal and ethical standards.

But the size of the payments has drawn scrutiny.

Richard W. Painter, who served as chief White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, publicly questioned the arrangement, arguing that government staff should not be treated like private employees receiving large personal bonuses.

Why Natalie Harp’s Gift Is Getting Attention

Harp occupies an unusually close position within Trump’s inner circle.

She is frequently seen alongside the president and has been described as helping manage his Truth Social activity and prepare social media material.

She has also drawn attention for carrying a portable printer that lets Trump receive printed media coverage and other information a practice that has contributed to her reputation as a particularly influential member of his staff.

Nauta is similarly close to the president. A former Trump White House valet, he later became director of Oval Office operations.

Nauta’s $20,000 Gift Adds Another Layer

Nauta was previously charged alongside former Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira in the classified-documents case involving Trump.

Federal prosecutors had accused the men of helping obstruct the investigation into documents Trump retained after leaving office. Nauta pleaded not guilty, and the case was ultimately dismissed after Trump returned to the presidency.

His newly disclosed $20,000 cash gift is therefore likely to attract additional attention because of his prominent role around Trump.

Trump’s Personal Gifting Practice Under the Microscope

The disclosures do not establish that Trump violated ethics rules.

Instead, they raise a broader question about the boundary between a president’s personal wealth and the compensation restrictions for federal employees.
