E- commerce industry likely to create 2.5 lakh jobs in India this year, says report
India is in the middle of a digital revolution. There is high penetration of the Internet, and an increasing number of smartphones has led to a boom in the e-commerce sector. A recent paper by ASSOCHAM has stated that the industry is likely to create almost 2.5 lakh jobs in India in 2016.
According to the Journal, an estimate of 2.5 million staff will be required by the e-commerce industry this year. This year, a majority of the e-commerce businesses have increased their turnover and is expected to develop the sector further.
Nearly 3,50,000 staff who are already working in the sector are looking to bring in new people into the industry this year, according to the report.
D S Rawat, Secretary General of ASSOCHAM while releasing the paper said, “the popularity of smartphones and other emerging channels increase with consumers, more retailers are beginning to merge and combine multiple departments and operations for all their customers
The hiring activities are expected to grow by over 60-65 per cent in the sector, which may help create between 5-8 lakh employment opportunities in two-three years”, he added.
E-commerce sector over the years has grown monumentally and according to the paper e-commerce market was worth around $3.8 billion in 2009 which went up to $17 billion in 2014 and then to $23 billion last year and is expected to touch $38 billion by 2016.
