Chairman of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani today announced that Jio Telecom hit 100 million subscribers since its launch 170 days ago. Implying that since launching, Jio has added a customer every seven seconds.
Ambani further announced that in April, when Jio starts charging customers all domestic calls – to any network – will continue to remain free of cost.
When Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd launched in September with its cheap data plans it shook up the telecom market in India. Speaking at a tech industry conference, he said, “When we started Jio and we set a target for ourselves in terms of saying that we will acquire a 100 million customers in the shortest time, even we didn’t imagine that we will do it in months in terms of that.”
While Reliance Industries have already invested more than $20 billion into the venture, there remain some concerns around whether or not Jio will be able to retain its users once charges are applied from April. According to experts, most subscribers are using Jio as a secondary connection to make the most of its free data plans.
