Kimi Antonelli Makes F1 History as Youngest F1 World Champion After Mexican GP Triumph

Kimi Antonelli has shattered Sebastian Vettel’s long-standing record to become Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion, sealing a historic title with a third-place finish at the Mexican Grand Prix.

Formula 1 has a new record-breaking champion: Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes sensation clinched the 2026 drivers’ championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, becoming the youngest title winner in the sport’s history at just 20 years and 68 days old.

Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish to secure the championship, but delivered something better by climbing onto the podium at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. His third-place result behind race winner Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was enough to end the title contest with four rounds still remaining.

The emotional Italian struggled to find words over team radio as Mercedes confirmed his achievement. After collecting himself, he thanked the team, celebrating a breakthrough moment that few expected to arrive so decisively.

Antonelli Smashes Sebastian Vettel’s F1 Record

The victory places Antonelli ahead of Sebastian Vettel as Formula 1’s youngest world champion. Vettel was 23 when he secured his first title in 2010, making Antonelli’s achievement a remarkable leap in the record books.

He is also the first Italian driver to win the championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a 73-year wait for another Italian to claim Formula 1’s biggest prize.

The title represents Mercedes’ first drivers’ championship since Lewis Hamilton’s 2020 triumph and the team’s 10th overall. It also vindicates the enormous confidence Mercedes placed in Antonelli, who joined its junior program at just 12 and later moved up to the senior team.

Nine Wins and a Remarkable Championship Campaign

Antonelli’s title-winning season has been built on extraordinary consistency and speed. After taking the championship lead following the Japanese Grand Prix, he quickly established himself as the driver to beat.

He won five of the first six races and eventually collected nine victories. Mechanical failures accounted for his only two non-scoring weekends, while he continued to protect his advantage as Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull improved.

One standout performance came at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where he charged from 19th on the grid to win his home race.

Pre-season expectations had favored Mercedes teammate George Russell, but Antonelli repeatedly outperformed him and turned an ambitious title challenge into a dominant championship campaign.

Verstappen Wins as Hamilton and Leclerc Clash

While Antonelli celebrated, the Mexican GP delivered plenty of drama elsewhere.

Max Verstappen produced an impressive drive from fifth on the grid to take victory, with Lewis Hamilton finishing second and Antonelli completing the podium. Ferrari’s race, however, was overshadowed by tension between Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc challenged Hamilton early and briefly took the lead after cutting the corner at Turns Four and Five. The stewards handed him a five-second penalty, but Hamilton believed his teammate’s maneuver had cost Ferrari a potential one-two finish.

The seven-time champion repeatedly expressed frustration over team radio, suggesting that Leclerc should have surrendered the position.

Red Flag Adds Drama to Antonelli’s Historic Day

The race was interrupted after Valtteri Bottas crashed his Cadillac at Turn One, triggering a red flag and a restart. Another safety-car period followed when Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad crashed after contact with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Despite the interruptions, Antonelli remained composed. He passed Leclerc after the restart and held his position through the closing laps, finishing less than two seconds behind Verstappen.

A New Era Begins for Mercedes

Antonelli’s championship marks the arrival of a new generation at the top of Formula 1. His rapid development has transformed the teenager once viewed as a high-risk replacement for Hamilton into the sport’s youngest champion.

With Max Verstappen still fighting at the front, Lewis Hamilton seeking further success and Mercedes celebrating its newest superstar, the 2027 season already promises an intriguing battle.

For now, the spotlight belongs entirely to Antonelli. At 20, he has achieved what generations of drivers could only dream of, and his first world championship may be just the beginning.
