Lewis Hamilton Demands ‘Serious Talks’ at Ferrari After Charles Leclerc Clash Costs Team Mexican GP Victory
Lewis Hamilton has fired a warning to Ferrari after a controversial first-lap battle with Charles Leclerc potentially cost the team a Mexican Grand Prix victory. The seven-time world champion says something must change before the internal rivalry damages Ferrari again.
Ferrari’s Mexican Grand Prix ended with more questions than celebrations after Lewis Hamilton openly criticized his teammate Charles Leclerc for their controversial opening-lap battle. Hamilton believes the pair threw away a potential one-two finish, allowing Max Verstappen to capitalize and take victory at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
The British driver did not hide his frustration after finishing second, insisting Ferrari needed to address the incident privately. His message was unmistakable: the team cannot afford to keep losing opportunities because its drivers are fighting each other.
“Ultimately, that lost us the win today,” Hamilton said. “We have to have some serious talks behind closed doors.”
Leclerc’s Aggressive Move Leaves Hamilton Furious
The controversy began shortly after the start when Leclerc challenged Hamilton for the lead through the opening corners. The Ferrari teammates went wide while battling through Turn Four, but Leclerc emerged ahead after cutting the chicane and traveling across the grass.
Instead of surrendering the position, the Monegasque driver held on to the lead. The move allowed Max Verstappen to pass Lewis Hamilton, putting Red Bull in a position to challenge for victory.
The stewards subsequently handed Charles Leclerc a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage by leaving the track. However, the punishment did little to satisfy Lewis Hamilton, who believed his teammate’s decision had compromised Ferrari’s entire race.
During a red-flag interruption caused by Valtteri Bottas’ Cadillac crash, Hamilton made his frustration clear over team radio, declaring that Ferrari had “big problems”.
Hamilton Says Ferrari Could Have Secured a One-Two
Hamilton argued Ferrari had the pace to control the race if both drivers had held their positions on the opening lap.
He suggested that staying first and second would have allowed the team to manage the race strategically rather than surrendering the advantage to Max Verstappen.
The seven-time champion also questioned the mentality behind Charles Leclerc’s decision, suggesting that winning individually appeared to take priority over the team’s overall result.
Hamilton stressed that every decision made on track affects thousands of people working behind the scenes at Ferrari. He warned that the situation would continue unless the team took action.
He also clarified that Ferrari currently has no formal rules governing how its drivers should race each other, leaving the team with difficult questions about how to manage future battles.

Charles Leclerc Admits Penalty Was Deserved
Leclerc offered a different perspective but acknowledged that the stewards’ decision was justified.
“The penalty was deserved in a way,” he admitted after the race.
The Ferrari driver explained that both cars had gone off track, making the situation confusing. However, with Verstappen moving into second place, he believed retaining the lead was worth accepting the possibility of a penalty.
Leclerc also pointed out that Hamilton had pushed him wide earlier in the opening sequence, arguing that aggressive racing was inevitable when two drivers were competing for victory.
He said he intended to speak with Lewis Hamilton and discuss the incident with the team.
Ferrari Boss Frederic Vasseur Faces Another Crisis
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur admitted he was frustrated by how the situation unfolded, particularly because of the consequences for the wider organization.
He said discussions would begin immediately, with the aim of resolving the disagreement before the next race.
The Mexican GP incident follows several other flashpoints between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc this season, including disagreements over team orders and their on-track battle at the Italian Grand Prix.
Verstappen Benefits as Ferrari’s Rivalry Explodes
While Ferrari dealt with internal tensions, Max Verstappen took advantage to secure another victory.
The Red Bull driver acknowledged that Ferrari’s drivers made life easier by fighting each other, allowing him to capitalize on their lost momentum.
With Brazil next on the calendar, Ferrari must now decide how to prevent another internal confrontation from undermining its results.
Lewis Hamilton has made his position clear. Ferrari has the pace to win, but unless its drivers start working together, another missed opportunity could be just around the corner.
