Verstappen Crushes Singapore GP Rivals as Hamilton’s Ferrari Gamble Backfires

Max Verstappen delivered a commanding performance to claim his first-ever Singapore Grand Prix victory, but the biggest talking points at Marina Bay extended well beyond the Red Bull driver’s latest triumph. Lewis Hamilton’s risky tyre strategy unraveled in the closing laps, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli moved closer to a potential Formula 1 world championship.

Verstappen controlled Sunday’s race from the opening corner, resisting an early challenge from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc before gradually disappearing into the distance. The victory marked his second consecutive Grand Prix win following Red Bull’s breakthrough success in Malaysia last weekend, reinforcing the team’s resurgence.

Charles Leclerc finished second, while Kimi Antonelli secured third place to strengthen his position at the top of the drivers’ championship. Hamilton, meanwhile, slipped to sixth after refusing to make a second pit stop despite warnings about his ageing tyres.

Verstappen Finally Conquers Singapore

Singapore had remained one of the notable victories missing from Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 record. The four-time world champion finally ended that wait with a performance reminiscent of his dominant title-winning campaigns.

The decisive moment came at the start. Charles Leclerc launched better off the line and challenged Verstappen into Turn One, trying to take the inside line. Verstappen defended aggressively, squeezing the Ferrari towards the pit wall and forcing Leclerc to back off.

With overtaking notoriously difficult around the Marina Bay Street Circuit, securing the lead early proved crucial.

Hamilton initially remained close to the leading pair, but his pace began to fade after the opening laps. Leclerc stayed within striking distance of Verstappen before the Red Bull gradually established control.

From there, Verstappen managed the race with authority, eventually crossing the line comfortably ahead of Leclerc.

Reflecting on Red Bull’s recent improvement, Verstappen said the team’s latest performances had been encouraging. He praised the people behind the turnaround and hoped the team could keep producing strong results before the season ends.

Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Strategy Gamble Backfires

Lewis Hamilton’s sixth-place finish became one of the race’s most controversial storylines after a bold tyre decision cost him valuable positions.

Starting on medium tyres while Max Verstappen and Leclerc opted for softs, Hamilton initially appeared to have a different strategic advantage. However, he switched to soft tyres on lap 18, earlier than Leclerc, who stopped on lap 24.

After their pit stops, Lewis Hamilton found himself behind his Ferrari teammate, raising questions about whether the team should have allowed him through to maximize his pace.

The situation changed dramatically on lap 39 when a virtual safety car created an opportunity for cheaper pit stops. Leclerc and Antonelli took advantage, but Lewis Hamilton stayed out, temporarily moving into second place behind Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton resisted instructions to stop again, believing he could reach the finish. Ferrari’s calculations, however, indicated that his tyres would not comfortably last the remaining distance.

The gamble ultimately failed.

As his grip deteriorated, Hamilton lost positions to Antonelli and McLaren’s Lando Norris. Oscar Piastri passed him on the final lap after Hamilton mounted a determined defense.

Lewis Hamilton later accepted responsibility for the decision, apologized to Ferrari, and described the result as a painful lesson.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur defended the team’s strategy, arguing that the pit crew called its drivers in under the virtual safety car and that Lewis Hamilton chose to stay out.

Kimi Antonelli Moves Within Reach of F1 History

While Max Verstappen celebrated victory, Kimi Antonelli left Singapore with a chance to make Formula 1 history.

The Mercedes driver finished third, extending his championship advantage over teammate George Russell to 102 points. He also holds a 111-point lead over Hamilton, according to the supplied championship standings.

With six race weekends remaining and a maximum of 150 points available, Kimi Antonelli could mathematically secure the title at the next round in Austin.

To clinch the championship at the United States Grand Prix, he must win while George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Hamilton finishes fifth or lower.

The possibility appeared to catch the 20-year-old by surprise immediately after the race.

Asked about his title opportunity, Antonelli initially responded with disbelief before insisting that he wanted to concentrate on delivering another strong weekend.

He later acknowledged that winning the championship was becoming a realistic ambition but stressed that consistent performances remained essential.

Antonelli also admitted he had not driven as well as he wanted in Singapore, expressing confidence that a reset before Austin could help him return stronger.

George Russell Struggles as McLaren Collects Valuable Points

Mercedes experienced mixed fortunes in Singapore. Antonelli strengthened his championship position, but Russell could manage only ninth after starting from 19th on the grid.

Russell fought through the field and delayed his pit stop, but his recovery eventually stalled behind Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg. His limited points haul increased the pressure ahead of the next race.

McLaren also benefited from Hamilton’s late decline, with Norris finishing fourth and Piastri fifth. Their results demonstrated how quickly the race order could change when tyre performance became a decisive factor.

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar secured the final championship point in 10th after starting from the back of the field.

United States Grand Prix Could Decide the Championship Battle

The Formula 1 circus now heads to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, for the United States GP  from October 23 to 25.

All eyes will be on Antonelli, who could become the youngest Formula 1 world champion if the necessary results fall into place.

Verstappen, meanwhile, has revived Red Bull’s hopes of ending the season on a high. His consecutive victories suggest the team has rediscovered competitive momentum, although the remaining races will determine whether that resurgence can continue.

Hamilton will also arrive in Austin under pressure to recover from a costly afternoon in Singapore. His decision to stay out during the virtual safety car transformed a potential podium opportunity into a sixth-place finish.

Singapore delivered a clear winner in Verstappen, but the championship implications could be even bigger. With Kimi Antonelli approaching a historic milestone and Ferrari facing questions over its race management, the next Grand Prix could become a defining moment of the season.
