Zuckerberg Yacht Questioned After Cruise Ship Rescues Stranded Boat in Alaska

Mark Zuckerberg is facing renewed scrutiny over his luxury superyacht after a smaller cruise ship rescued a stranded boat and its crew in Southeast Alaska, despite reports that the billionaire’s vessel was closer to the incident.

The 387-foot Launchpad, reportedly worth about $300 million, was operating in the region when a 21-foot skiff ran out of fuel between Petersburg and Juneau last week. A Coast Guard assistance broadcast was subsequently issued, with the nearby UnCruise Adventures vessel Wilderness Legacy eventually responding.

The incident attracted attention after a passenger aboard the cruise ship claimed its captain told guests that Mark Zuckerberg’s superyacht had been closer but had not responded to the request for assistance.

Cruise Ship Responds to Call for Help

According to passengers, the cruise ship diverted from its route to assist the stranded skiff after the Coast Guard contacted vessels in the area. Passengers reacted strongly when the captain explained that Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht had reportedly been closer.

The Wilderness Legacy reached the stranded vessel, towed it to a sheltered location, and helped refuel the skiff. UnCruise Adventures later confirmed that the skiff’s occupants made it safely to Petersburg.

Vessel-tracking data also appeared to show the Launchpad slowing near Farragut Bay while the Wilderness Legacy travelled toward the location where the stranded skiff was found.

Zuckerberg Was Not Aboard Launchpad

The reports have raised questions about why the Launchpad did not assist. However, Mark Zuckerberg and his family were not aboard the yacht at the time, according to a spokesperson.

Brian Baker, a spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, said the yacht’s crew had been monitoring a different radio channel when the Coast Guard communication was made.

By the time the crew reviewed the communication, Baker said, the rescue operation was already underway.

“Mark and his family were not on board at the time of the incident,” the spokesperson said, adding that the boat was not considered to be in distress and that the crew became aware of the Coast Guard contact after the assistance was already underway.

The spokesperson also expressed relief that everyone involved was safe.

Coast Guard Says Boat Was Not in Distress

The circumstances surrounding the incident are more nuanced than some social media reactions suggested.

The US Coast Guard and the Marine Exchange of Alaska said the skiff had not issued a formal distress call. Instead, the Coast Guard received a request for assistance shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The Marine Exchange subsequently repeated the broadcast and was able to contact the Wilderness Legacy, which ultimately provided assistance.

Launchpad Becomes Focus of Online Debate

The incident has nevertheless generated considerable online discussion about wealth, luxury yachts and responsibility at sea.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Launchpad has spent much of the summer in Southeast Alaska, attracting attention because of its size and reported price tag. Some social media users criticised the yacht after hearing that a smaller cruise vessel ultimately handled the rescue.

Others pointed out that the available information does not establish that the yacht intentionally refused to help a vessel in danger. The Coast Guard’s determination that the skiff was not in distress, combined with the spokesperson’s explanation about the radio channel, provides important context.

Small Cruise Ships Routinely Assist Stranded Vessels

For UnCruise Adventures, the incident was not necessarily unusual.

The Alaska incident ultimately ended safely, with the stranded skiff reaching Petersburg the following day.

While the episode has fuelled criticism of Zuckerberg’s superyacht, the available accounts suggest a combination of circumstances rather than a straightforward refusal to rescue a vessel in distress. It also highlights how quickly an ordinary marine assistance request can become a major story when one of the world’s most recognisable billionaires and his $300 million yacht are involved.
