Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez On Freezing Her Eggs and Political Career

US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed that she has begun the process of freezing her eggs, offering an unusually personal look at a fertility decision she said she had considered for a long time. The 36-year-old New York Democrat shared videos documenting some of her first steps in the process on social media, including footage of herself administering medication by injection.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she normally keeps her personal life private but decided to discuss egg freezing because she believes many women receive too little practical information about fertility and reproductive health.

In one of the videos, she explained some of the questions she had encountered around the process, including medication, medical procedures, costs and the logistics involved in storing eggs.

She also acknowledged that the decision carried a degree of political risk because of her public profile.

AOC Wants to “Normalise” Fertility Conversations

During an appearance on ABC News’ This Week, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she wanted to make conversations around egg freezing more ordinary, particularly amid what she described as a politically charged environment surrounding reproductive healthcare in the United States.

She argued that public figures can help make discussions about fertility less intimidating by openly sharing their experiences.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also connected the discussion to broader debates over reproductive healthcare, saying women face challenges ranging from abortion access to pregnancy care.

The congresswoman has previously been outspoken on women’s health and reproductive rights. Her decision to publicly discuss egg freezing represents another example of her willingness to bring reproductive health issues into political and public conversations.

Ocasio-Cortez Documents Her Fertility Journey

In her social media posts, AOC discussed the lack of information she believes women receive about their bodies and reproductive health at different stages of life.

She also shared a light-hearted moment involving her French bulldog, Deco, while explaining the medication used during the procedure.

After giving herself an injection, the congresswoman remarked that the experience was less intimidating than she had expected.

Her decision to document the process appears intended partly to provide practical information to women who may be considering fertility preservation themselves.

At the same time, egg freezing can involve significant financial and medical considerations, meaning access to the procedure remains an important part of the wider reproductive-health debate.

AOC Leaves Door Open to 2028 Presidential Run

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s fertility announcement came on the same weekend that she addressed speculation about a possible presidential campaign in 2028.

During her This Week appearance, she was asked about polling that showed her as a potential Democratic contender for the White House.

Rather than committing to a future presidential campaign, Ocasio-Cortez emphasised her immediate political priorities.

She said her focus was on winning the upcoming midterm elections and returning to Congress, but when asked directly whether a presidential bid was something she had ruled out, she acknowledged that she had not.

Ocasio-Cortez said she was humbled by the level of support but stressed that elected officials should concentrate on their current responsibilities rather than personal political ambitions.

Senate Run Also Remains Possible

The congresswoman was also asked about the possibility of challenging Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer for his New York seat. Her response was similarly open-ended, suggesting that she did not want to close off future political possibilities.

The next US midterm elections are scheduled for November, with all 435 House seats and roughly one-third of Senate seats up for election.

For now, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s political message remains focused on the midterms, while her decision to publicly discuss egg freezing has added a deeply personal dimension to her public profile.

Why Ocasio-Cortez’s Announcement Matters

Ocasio-Cortez’s announcement places fertility preservation alongside the broader reproductive-health issues she has addressed throughout her political career.

By sharing details of a process that can often remain private, she is seeking to encourage more open discussion about fertility, medical care and the choices available to women.

Her comments also illustrate the increasingly blurred line between personal experiences and political conversations for high-profile public figures.

For Ocasio-Cortez, the decision to discuss egg freezing is ultimately about making fertility conversations less daunting — while allowing voters a glimpse into a personal decision she has traditionally kept away from the public spotlight.
