Meta Muse AI Agent Launches: Mark Zuckerberg Unveils AI That Can Actually Work for You

Mark Zuckerberg’s company has unveiled Muse, a new personal AI agent designed to do more than answer questions; it can take actions, manage projects, browse the web, fill out forms, and keep working toward goals even after users close the app.

Meta announced Muse on September 8, describing it as a personal AI agent built to take work off people’s plates rather than simply generate another chatbot response. The service is initially rolling out in the US on iOS, Android, and the web, with Meta planning to bring Muse to its AI glasses.

The move puts Meta squarely into the increasingly competitive race to build AI agents capable of performing real-world tasks autonomously.

Forget Chatbots: Muse Is Designed to Take Action

The biggest difference between Muse and a conventional AI chatbot is what happens after the user gives it an instruction.

Instead of simply explaining how to book a trip, Muse can potentially handle the process itself. Meta says the agent can book travel, send emails, complete online forms, browse websites, coordinate projects, and work toward longer-term objectives.

Users tell Muse what they want accomplished, and the system can break the objective into smaller steps before working through them.

That means the interaction could shift from “Tell me how to do this” to “Do this for me.”

And that distinction could become one of the biggest changes in consumer AI.

Muse Can Keep Working After You Close the App

Meta has built Muse around a dedicated cloud-based environment called Muse Secure VM.

The virtual machine gives Muse its own computer and browser, allowing the agent to continue working on tasks even when the user is no longer actively using the app.

For longer-running goals, Meta says Muse can develop a personalized plan, coordinate time and resources, and continue making progress until it needs human approval or something changes.

For sensitive actions, however, Muse is designed to stop and ask.

That includes actions such as sending an email or completing a purchase.

The AI Could Remember What You Care About

Mark Zuckerberg with Meta is also betting heavily on personalization.

AI Agent can remember information users have shared and use that context later to make suggestions or complete tasks.

Meta gives a striking example: a recipe saved from Instagram could become a grocery list, while Muse could also suggest a dinner menu and remember guests’ dietary restrictions.

The goal is to make the AI less like a search box and more like a digital personal assistant that understands ongoing priorities.

Muse is powered by Muse Spark, which Meta describes as its most capable model to date for real-world agentic work.

Meta Knows the Privacy Question Is Huge

Giving an AI agent access to email, websites, shopping accounts, and personal information creates an obvious security challenge.

Meta says Muse Secure VM isolates the agent and connected data in a dedicated cloud computer. A separate security system called Sentinel reviews what Muse attempts to send to the internet.

Users also decide which apps Meta’s AI Agent can access and what permissions it receives. Meta says Muse does not directly see users’ stored passwords or payment details, while sensitive actions require approval. Users can also disconnect services and ask Muse to forget specific information.

Later this year, Meta plans to introduce Muse Confidential VM, which it says will encrypt the entire virtual machine with a user-controlled key.

Meta’s Bigger AI Gamble

Muse is more than another feature inside Meta AI. It represents the company’s broader push toward what Meta calls personal superintelligence, AI that can understand an individual’s context and take on increasingly complex work.

The service is initially available in the US through iOS, Android and the web, with AI glasses support coming later. Meta says most basic use will be free, while subscription plans will provide additional capabilities.

The real test now is simple: Will people trust an AI enough to let it act for them?

If Meta gets that answer right, this could mark the moment AI assistants stop merely talking to users and start doing things for them.
