Beck is back with stunning new single “Ride Lonesome”, long-awaited album coming?

After seven years without a solo album, Beck has returned with something deceptively simple and deeply felt. His new single, “Ride Lonesome,” is a gauzy, acoustic-driven meditation on solitude and perseverance. For longtime fans, it immediately recalls the introspective beauty of his 2002 masterpiece Sea Change and its 2014 spiritual successor Morning Phase.

That’s no coincidence. To record the track, Beck reassembled the exact team behind Sea Change, bringing back guitarist Jason Falkner, guitarist Smokey Hormel, and drummer Joey Waronker, with producer Nigel Godrich returning to mix the finished song. It is, in every sense, a reunion of one of the most beloved creative configurations in Beck’s career.

The story behind the song

Speaking about the origins of “Ride Lonesome,” Beck described a period of personal difficulty and reflection. He framed the new song as an expression of the quiet resilience required to move through hard times, finding a kind of dark comfort in pressing forward over uncertain terrain, holding on to a distant belief that things will eventually come right. It is a theme that resonates universally, and one that Beck articulates with characteristic elegance.

The single follows a surprise EP Beck released in late January, Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime, a collection of cover songs and long-sought rarities that signalled he was re-entering the spotlight after a quieter stretch.

What Beck has been doing for seven years

In a wide-ranging interview, Beck offered a rare look into how he has spent the years since Hyperspace, his 2019 Pharrell-produced album. Beyond navigating the disruption of the COVID era, he has been remarkably productive behind the scenes: contributing to a Gorillaz track, collaborating with Paul McCartney, co-writing the majority of The Black Keys’ album Ohio Players, and spending sustained time in a recording studio he built himself.

He described the period as one of the most prolific of his life, suggesting that multiple albums’ worth of material exists, much of it likely never to be released, but all of it feeding into what comes next. He has also been quietly reconvening with the core band of musicians who played on his early touring records, stealing time in the studio with them whenever schedules allow.

Is a new album coming?

Beck stopped short of confirming a full-length release, but the signals are hard to ignore. A surprise EP, a stunning new single with his most celebrated collaborators, a home studio, and years of accumulated songwriting all point in one direction. For fans who have been waiting since 2019, “Ride Lonesome” may be the most encouraging sign yet that the wait is nearly over.
