Apple iPhone Duo Finally Arrives: First Foldable iPhone Starts at $1,999

Apple has finally done what iPhone fans have been waiting for years: it has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone, combining a pocketable 5.4-inch outer display with a massive 7.6-inch folding screen.

The new iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (around ₹1.78 lakh) in the U.S., based on an approximate ₹89-per-dollar conversion. In India, Apple’s official starting price for iPhone Duo is considerably higher at ₹2,99,900 for the 256GB model. Storage options extend through 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

Pre-orders open on October 16, with the iPhone Duo reaching stores on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including India.

Apple Finally Enters the Foldable iPhone Era

When opened, the iPhone Duo becomes Apple’s largest iPhone display yet.

The 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, giving users substantially more room for gaming, streaming, multitasking, and productivity. Apple has also added a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections while making the folding display feel more natural to use.

Fold the phone shut, and it becomes a much more conventional device, with a 5.4-inch outer display that Apple says provides more than 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.

Both screens use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition between displays without dramatically changing its proportions.

The Foldable Is Built Around A20 Pro

Apple isn’t treating the Duo as a stripped-down experimental device.

The phone runs on the A20 Pro chip, paired with a custom vapor-chamber thermal system and dual-battery architecture. Apple says the combination delivers pro-level performance while maintaining all-day battery life.

The device uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, with Ceramic Shield protection on the front and back. Apple also gives the foldable an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance under controlled laboratory conditions.

Apple’s official specifications list the phone at just 5.2mm thick when open, although it becomes 11.3mm thick when folded. The open device weighs 254 grams.

Apple Gives the Camera a Foldable Twist

The Apple iPhone Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, including 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide cameras.

But Apple is betting that the folding form factor itself can change how people take pictures.

Smart Take uses on-device AI to automatically capture moments when subjects are posing, potentially making group photographs easier without someone being left behind the camera.

Duo Preview places a live camera preview on the outer display, allowing people being photographed to check their framing.

The foldable design also enables new shooting positions, while Dual Capture lets users record from the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

iOS 27 Has Been Rebuilt Around the Fold

Apple has redesigned parts of iOS 27 specifically for the Duo.

Controls, navigation, and the Dock move toward the sides of the interface to maximize vertical screen space. When opened, users can run apps side by side, while content can automatically reorient as the device changes position.

The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned for the Duo’s unusual display configuration.

Apple is clearly trying to make the foldable feel less like an iPhone stretched across two screens and more like a completely new category of iPhone.

Siri AI Becomes More Important

The iPhone Duo also arrives as Apple expands Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

Siri AI can interact with apps and personal context, while Apple adds AI-powered image tools, improved Clean Up, Spatial Reframing, and other capabilities.

Apple says its AI architecture combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute to keep personal information protected while enabling more demanding tasks.

The Duo will ship with iOS 27.1, with Siri AI rolling out in beta and availability varying by language and region.

iPhone Duo Price, India Availability and Accessories

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (approximately ₹1.78 lakh) in the U.S.

In India, the Apple iPhone Duo official starting price is ₹2,99,900, or roughly $3,370 at an illustrative ₹89-per-dollar exchange rate. Apple’s Indian pricing is therefore substantially higher than a simple currency conversion of the U.S. price.

The 512GB model costs ₹3,24,900, the 1TB version costs ₹3,74,900, and the 2TB model reaches ₹4,49,900 in India.

Apple’s iPhone Duo Case costs $79 (₹8,900 in India), while the Folio with Kickstand costs $129 (₹14,900 in India).

The iPhone Duo could therefore be Apple’s most radical iPhone launch in years. After years of watching Samsung and other manufacturers dominate the foldable market, Apple is finally making its move, and it is coming with a very high price tag.
