Apple’s New Touchscreen MacBook Pro Costs a Staggering $14,549 Fully Loaded
Apple has finally brought touchscreen technology to the MacBook Pro, but its most expensive configuration costs an astonishing $14,549. With a new OLED display, M5 Max power, and a massive 16TB storage option, the premium laptop pushes Mac pricing into unprecedented territory.
Apple has officially introduced a touchscreen MacBook Pro, marking a major change for its professional laptop lineup. But while the new device brings an OLED display, powerful M5-series processors and touch-based controls, its pricing is likely to grab as much attention as its technology.
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,899, while the 16-inch model begins at $3,399. Customers who configure the machines with the most expensive available upgrades could pay $14,249 for the 14-inch version or $14,549 for the 16-inch model.
That puts Apple’s most expensive MacBook Pro configuration $4,400 above the previous 16-inch model’s reported maximum price of $10,149.
For buyers seeking the ultimate professional Mac, the new lineup offers more performance and storage than ever. However, the cost of the top specification could put the machine beyond many professionals’ budgets.
Why Does the Touchscreen MacBook Pro Cost So Much?
The biggest contributor to the price is the combination of Apple’s M5 Max processor, high-capacity memory, and unusually large storage options.
The top configuration features an M5 Max chip with an 18-core CPU and a 40-core GPU. The processor is designed for demanding workloads, including professional video editing, graphics production, and other computationally intensive tasks.
Storage upgrades are particularly expensive. Moving to a 4TB SSD reportedly adds $1,000, while the 8TB option adds $3,000. Customers choosing the new 16TB configuration face a $7,000 upgrade charge.
Memory also pushes the total higher. Upgrading to 128GB costs another $2,000, while Apple’s nano-texture glass option adds $150.
The combination of high-end components and Apple’s premium upgrade pricing helps explain how a laptop that starts below $3,000 can exceed $14,500 when fully configured. Broader pressure on memory supplies and growing demand for hardware used in artificial intelligence could also influence component costs, although Apple has not attributed the pricing directly to those factors.
Apple Finally Brings Touchscreens to the MacBook Pro
Beyond the price, the new MacBook Pro represents a significant change in Apple’s laptop strategy.
The company has traditionally relied on a keyboard, trackpad, and macOS interface rather than adding direct touch controls to its Mac notebooks. Its earlier experiment with the Touch Bar introduced a narrow touch-sensitive strip above the keyboard, but Apple eventually discontinued the feature.
The new model takes a different approach by integrating touch functionality into the main display.
Apple says the touch sensor is built directly into the screen panel rather than placed on top of it, a design intended to reduce input latency. Users can perform familiar gestures such as scrolling through webpages, zooming into photographs, and interacting directly with onscreen controls.
The feature could also appeal to developers testing iOS and iPadOS applications, as well as musicians using software instruments.
OLED Display and Dynamic Island Make Their Debut
The touchscreen MacBook Pro features what Apple calls a “PROLED XDR” display, based on tandem OLED technology.
According to the announcement, the screen supports peak SDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits, a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1.
Apple is also bringing its Dynamic Island concept to the Mac display. The interactive area can display information such as Live Activities, extending a familiar iPhone feature to the laptop.
Another notable addition is the return of a glowing Apple logo on the laptop lid, a design detail long associated with older MacBook models.
Release Date and Availability
Apple announced the touchscreen MacBook Pro at its “Pro and tell” event, with preorders opening ahead of the planned November 6 release.
The new machine combines a major interface change with premium hardware and substantial upgrade costs. For users who need maximum processing power, memory and storage, the top configuration may be appealing.
For everyone else, the central question is whether touchscreen functionality and the OLED upgrade justify paying thousands more for a MacBook Pro. Apple’s new laptop may redefine what a high-end Mac can do, but its $14,549 maximum price ensures that affordability will remain part of the conversation.
