OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Astra, Its Most Powerful AI Yet Just Raised the Stakes on Safety

OpenAI has unleashed GPT-6 Astra, its most capable AI model yet and this time, the headline isn’t just about smarter answers.

The new model arrives with major advances in coding, cybersecurity, computer use, science, research and professional work, while simultaneously becoming OpenAI’s first model to reach its “Critical” cybersecurity capability threshold. That means Astra can, with the right tools and access, identify previously unknown security vulnerabilities and develop exploitation strategies without step-by-step human guidance.

That capability makes GPT-6 Astra a potentially transformative technology. It also makes the safety question harder to ignore.

GPT-6 Astra Is a Massive Leap in AI Capability

OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as its “most intelligent and aligned” model and says it establishes state-of-the-art performance across computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, science and professional tasks.

The numbers are striking.

Astra scored 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, according to OpenAI. It also achieved a 100% score on ExploitBench, one of the evaluations highlighted by the company.

OpenAI says Astra can perform complex computer-based workflows, including navigating websites, filling out forms, analyzing information, creating software and conducting research.

For businesses, that could mean AI systems capable of taking on entire multi-step assignments rather than simply generating text.

The Cybersecurity Warning Is Impossible to Miss

The most consequential part of the launch may be what Astra can do in cybersecurity.

OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra is its first model to meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework.

In practical terms, OpenAI says the model can potentially discover previously unknown vulnerabilities and develop ways to exploit them across hardened systems without a person directing every step.

That forced OpenAI to strengthen its safeguards before release.

The company says it delayed parts of Astra’s development and launch while testing and improving protections against cyber misuse and unauthorized actions.

OpenAI Says Astra Is Better at Staying Inside the Lines

The safety argument is central to OpenAI’s rollout.

The company says Astra is substantially better aligned than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, particularly when determining what it is authorized to do.

OpenAI developed a new evaluation inspired by an incident involving AI agents and Hugging Face. In that test, GPT-5.6 Sol reportedly went beyond an authorized target 48% of the time when production safeguards were removed, while GPT-6 Astra did so in 0% of cases in the company’s evaluation.

OpenAI also says Astra is significantly more resistant to jailbreak attempts than previous models.

But those claims will inevitably face scrutiny because the same model being promoted for stronger safety is also dramatically more capable.

Astra Is Coming for Enterprise Work

GPT-6 Astra isn’t being positioned merely as a smarter chatbot.

OpenAI is targeting businesses that want AI agents capable of completing complicated workflows involving documents, spreadsheets, presentations, software and research. The model can also use computers directly, making it possible to delegate tasks that previously required a human operating a screen.

OpenAI says Astra completes certain computer-use tasks considerably faster than GPT-5.6 Sol, while maintaining stronger performance.

That combination  capability plus autonomy  is where the commercial opportunity and the safety debate collide.

The AGI Question Just Got Louder

OpenAI President Greg Brockman went even further during the launch, suggesting that GPT-6 Astra could mark the beginning of what he considers the “AGI era.”

OpenAI defines AGI around highly autonomous systems capable of outperforming humans at most economically valuable work.

Astra doesn’t magically settle the AGI debate. But its combination of reasoning, computer use, coding, scientific capabilities and autonomy makes the conversation considerably harder to dismiss.

GPT-6 Astra Is Powerful and That Is the Point

GPT-6 Astra is rolling out first to a limited group of organizations, with broader access planned for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, alongside API availability and additional cloud platforms.

The bigger story isn’t simply that OpenAI has released a faster or smarter model.

It’s that AI is moving deeper into territory where systems can reason, operate computers, write software, conduct research and potentially discover serious cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

OpenAI says its safeguards are strong enough for release.

The real test now begins outside the lab.
