UNIVO Makes ChatGPT Advertising Move as AI Changes How Indians Choose Degrees

OpenAI said on August 31 that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in less than 200 days and that advertising was expanding globally. It also said direct self-service advertising was launching in India and other regions.

UNIVO Education says it has become the first major Indian edtech brand to directly run advertising campaigns on ChatGPT for university partners, marking a potentially significant shift in how students discover online degrees and higher-education programmes.

The move comes just days after OpenAI expanded direct ChatGPT advertising access to India. OpenAI said advertisers in India can now purchase ChatGPT ads directly through its Ads Manager, rather than relying exclusively on agency or technology partners.

UNIVO says its campaigns are already live across multiple programmes and are being operated directly by the company rather than through a commerce media intermediary.

The bigger story, however, may not be the advertising technology itself. It is the fight for the moment when a prospective student asks “Which degree is right for me?”

ChatGPT Is Becoming the New College Search Box

For years, students researching degrees have relied on Google, comparison websites, university portals, rankings, forums and social media.

That behaviour is changing.

Instead of entering a few keywords into a search engine, prospective learners can now describe their circumstances in detail: their qualifications, career ambitions, location, budget, work commitments and preferred course format.

That creates an entirely different environment for education companies.

Nitin Golani, CEO of UNIVO Education, said course discovery is changing as learners increasingly describe their situations and ask conversational questions rather than simply entering short search queries.

“If that is where the question is being asked, a credible institution needs to be present in that conversation,” Golani said.

UNIVO Wants to Get There Before the Application Form

The strategic opportunity for UNIVO is straightforward: reach learners before they decide where to apply.

An online degree can represent a multi-year commitment involving substantial tuition costs and major career consequences. That makes the initial research stage particularly valuable for universities and education platforms competing for students.

UNIVO says its ChatGPT advertising capability forms part of its broader learner-discovery and engagement technology stack, which it operates for university partners.

The company claims its programmes now reach more than 2.5 lakh learners across 16,500 pin codes and more than 150 countries, putting conversational AI directly into a large existing education-discovery ecosystem.

The First-Mover Race Has Begun

UNIVO’s move comes as advertising inside conversational AI moves rapidly from experiment to mainstream commercial infrastructure.

OpenAI said on August 31 that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in less than 200 days and that advertising was expanding globally. It also said direct self-service advertising was launching in India and other regions.

That means Indian brands are no longer simply watching the AI advertising revolution from the sidelines.

They can now compete for attention inside conversations where consumers are researching products, comparing options and making decisions.

For edtech companies, that could become particularly powerful.

A student asking an AI assistant to compare online MBA programmes is already signalling substantially more intent than someone casually scrolling through a banner advertisement.

But ChatGPT Ads Don’t Control the Answers

There is an important distinction.

OpenAI says advertisements are clearly labelled and remain separate from ChatGPT’s answers. Advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter the responses generated by ChatGPT.

That distinction could become increasingly important as more education companies attempt to establish themselves inside AI-powered discovery.

Being visible next to a conversation is one thing. Influencing the actual answer is another—and OpenAI says advertisers cannot do that.

India’s Next Education Boom Could Start With a Question

UNIVO believes the opportunity goes far beyond advertising.

India is preparing for a massive expansion in higher-education demand, while learners increasingly turn to digital platforms before contacting an institution.

That means the traditional education funnel may be changing.

Search first. Compare second. Apply third is increasingly becoming ask first, explore second, decide third.

For universities and edtech platforms, winning that first question could become just as important as winning the final application.

UNIVO has now planted its flag in that emerging battleground.

The real test will be whether conversational AI advertising can turn curiosity into enrolments—and whether other Indian edtech giants rush into ChatGPT before the first-mover advantage disappears.
