New York City Drops Hammer on AI in Schools With One-Year Ban Affecting 600,000 Kids
Teachers will remain permitted to use AI for tasks such as lesson planning and administrative work, provided the tools meet New York City Public Schools’ safety standards.
New York City, under Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is banning generative AI in classrooms, including student-facing AI for children through eighth grade, as officials launch a year-long experiment to determine how much technology is too much.
New York City has drawn a major line in the rapidly escalating battle over AI in education.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels have announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative artificial intelligence tools for students from 2-K through eighth grade, affecting nearly 600,000 public school students during the 2026-27 academic year.
City officials describe the move as the most expansive student-facing AI moratorium in the nation, putting one of America’s largest school systems firmly on the cautious side of the classroom AI debate.
NYC Says Kids Need People, Not Chatbots
Zohran Mamdani framed the decision as a direct challenge to the idea that AI should inevitably become part of early education.
“Children need teachers and human connection in order to learn and grow,” Zohran Mamdani said, arguing that students need opportunities to work with peers, build relationships with educators and solve difficult problems independently.
The mayor said the city would spend the next year studying AI’s impact rather than allowing rapidly evolving technology to become embedded in classrooms before its effects are fully understood.
The policy also bans companion chatbots across all grades, dramatically expanding the restrictions beyond younger students.
Around 40 AI Tools Face the Classroom Freeze
The moratorium will stop students from using roughly 40 educational AI tools currently deployed in New York City classrooms.
But the city isn’t declaring war on all educational technology.
Instead, officials are ordering a comprehensive review of technology used throughout New York City Public Schools. Tools considered nonessential to learning could ultimately be removed, while vendors will face scrutiny over safety, transparency, instructional design, evidence of effectiveness and data practices.
The policy effectively turns the 2026-27 school year into a giant evaluation period for classroom technology.
High School Students Get a Very Different Deal
High school students won’t face the blanket AI ban.
Instead, every public high school student will receive twice-yearly AI literacy instruction designed to teach them what AI is, how it can produce biased or unreliable information, its ethical implications, and how the technology could affect future careers.
The city will also launch five tightly controlled AI pilot programs involving up to 50,000 general-education high school students, or about 5% of the city’s public-school population.
Students will use selected AI tools under direct teacher supervision and strict time limits.
The pilots include Quill for English language arts, Edia for mathematics, Brisk Teaching, Playlab, and Intel AI-Ready Schools.

Screen Time Is Getting Hit Too
The NYC school AI ban comes with another major technology restriction: recommended daily screen-time limits.
Students in grades three through five will face a recommended cap of 30 minutes of 1:1 screen time per day, while students in grades six through eight will have a recommended limit of 45 minutes.
The city says it wants schools to focus on technology that demonstrably contributes to learning rather than simply adding more screens to children’s lives.
Teachers Can Still Use AI
The NYC school ban isn’t aimed at educators themselves.
Teachers will remain permitted to use AI for tasks such as lesson planning and administrative work, provided the tools meet New York City Public Schools’ safety standards.
There are also exceptions for students with disabilities, multilingual learners and students involved in career-readiness programs such as computer science.
That means the policy is less an outright rejection of AI than an attempt to control who uses it, when they use it and why.
NYC Joins Growing Backlash Against Classroom AI
New York’s decision arrives amid a nationwide debate over whether generative AI will improve education or undermine the development of independent thinking.
Los Angeles Unified, the nation’s second-largest school district, has also temporarily blocked generative AI tools on student devices while developing a broader policy.
At least 37 states have some form of official AI guidance for schools, but there is still no consistent national framework governing AI literacy or student use.
Education advocates are split.
Supporters say the moratorium gives schools time to establish evidence-based safeguards before children become dependent on technology. Critics, meanwhile, warn that students also need practical experience with AI because the technology will increasingly shape higher education and the workplace.
One Year to Decide AI’s Future in NYC Schools
A new Technology in Schools Coalition made up of students, parents, educators, advocates, unions, experts and elected officials will study the impact of the restrictions and pilot programs throughout the coming school year.
The coalition will eventually issue recommendations for future policy.
For Mamdani’s administration, the message is blunt: AI may be transforming the world, but that doesn’t mean it gets unlimited access to the classroom.
New York City is now betting that children should learn how to think before machines learn how to think for them.
