5 North Eastern Restaurants in Bangalore

North Eastern cuisine is one that is seriously undermined in the rest of the country. Being so full of flavour and authenticity, it is surprising to see so few of these restaurants, especially with the hordes of Tibetan joints dotting Bangalore. If you don’t have a close friend from the North East who is willing to share with you some of the sublime culinary palates of the area, you are missing out. We’ve compiled a bunch of authentic North Eastern eateries in the Bangalore vicinity for you to check out.

The Naga Kitchen, Koramangala

The Naga Kitchen

One of the few authentic joints around, their pork combo meals will leave you craving for more. With an array of dishes that would ordinarily accompany a Naga palette, the restaurant adds charm by introducing a host of Tibetan and Chinese items. This not-too-posh restaurant can only seat around 40 people. Slightly slow service and food preparation time is a problem, but it’s flavourful pork dishes and smoked fish more than make up for it.

The Naga Kitchen is located at 112, 6th Cross, 6th Block, Koramangala, Bangalore and a meal for two costs approximately Rs.400.

Axomi: The Taste of Assam

For an authentic slice of Assamese food in Bangalore, this is the place to go. An ambient little restaurant brimming with hospitality, the vibes are great. The extremely helpful staff can also help you decide on a delectable course as the names of the dishes are mostly in native Assamese, without an English description. With some traditional folk music in the background, and some great Thali options, it is an affordable alternative to pizza or Chinese. They also serve rice beer.

Axomi: The Taste of Assam is located at 360, 7th Block, Koramangala, Bangalore and a meal for two costs approximately Rs.500.

Zingron, Koramangala

Zingron

A flamboyant restaurant in Koramangala, plush red interiors greet you, along with some beautiful smells of pulled and smoked pork. As authentic Nagamese as one can get, you can even request for the spicy chilli oil. Their pork meals are as diverse as you can get and their a la carte is quite substantial, even for vegetarians. What easily takes the cake though is their version of rice beer. At 60 bucks a mug, this brew really helps to wash down all that smoked pork.

Zingron is located at Solitaire, 62, 2nd Floor, 1st A Main, 7th Block, Koramangala, Bangalore and a meal for two costs approximately Rs.650.

The Ants Cafe & Store

This little cafe, tucked away inside Indiranagar, has all the vibes of a great Sunday brunch. Bacon, ham, eggs etc. However, the owner, being from the North East, maintains a diverse handicrafts shop downstairs and hosts food festivals. The decor is very consciously appropriated with North Eastern culture in a manner that is quite contemporary and catchy. Although these food festivals aren’t too frequent, they contain a complete array of the flavours of Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur, so make sure you catch the next one!

The Ants Cafe & Store is located at 2286/B, 1st Cross, 14th A Main, HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar, Bangalore and a meal for two costs approximately Rs.700.

N.E. Diner

Short for North Eastern Diner, this place is anything but it! With a restaurant that serves Chinese, Italian, Tibetan, Continental and North-Indian cuisines, they have a selection of Manipuri and Nagamese delicacies tucked away at the end of the menu. With a slightly fast-food vibe about the joint, even though it is a sit-down restaurant, the food also reflects this, and although tastes quite good, may not be so authentic. It still makes for a great place to take your friends, with some loud music and multiple culinary options.

N.E Diner is located at 404, Opposite Raheja Arcade, 2nd Floor, 7th Block, Koramangala, Bangalore
