Airtel Payments Bank opened more than one lakh savings accounts in Uttar Pradesh in two weeks of launching

Within two weeks of launching India’s first payments bank, Airtel Payments Bank opened more than one lakh savings accounts in Uttar Pradesh. Of the accounts opened, Airtel has said that approximately 60% are in rural areas enabling unbanked and underbanked pockets of the State to be serviced too.

Delighted with response received from Uttar Pradesh and looking to build on the momentum, Shashi Arora, MD & CEO, Airtel Payments Bank said “Airtel Payments Bank is fully committed to taking its simple and convenient services deeper into the state and contribute towards financial inclusion and banking for all.”

Over 12,000 neighbourhood Airtel retail stores in Uttar Prades will function as banking points where customers will be able to open savings accounts and make cash withdrawals and deposits at any of these points. There are nearly two-thirds of these banking points in rural areas which allows for massive scope of extending the reach of services.

Airtel Payments Bank, a fully digital and paperless bank, aims to take basic banking services to the doorstep of every Indian by leveraging Airtel’s vast retail network. Speaking on the same, Sashi added, “We are also building a digital payments ecosystem that will enable customers to make cashless payments for goods and services across millions of merchants across the country and invite merchants across Uttar Pradesh to be a part of this ecosystem.”
