Cristiano Ronaldo Addresses Portugal Walkout as Jorge Jesus Rift Explodes

Cristiano Ronaldo has finally broken his silence over the dramatic Portugal walkout that sent shockwaves through the national team, insisting he is not retiring from international football, though he admits his actions deserve punishment.

The 41-year-old Al-Nassr superstar issued a lengthy statement spanning 11 Instagram slides, offering his version of the dispute with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus and accusing the manager of breaking his word on two occasions.

Cristiano Ronaldo also apologized to Portugal supporters and his teammates for leaving the national-team camp, but made it clear that he still wants to represent his country.

“If I am physically well, playing for my club, with goals, I hope, after serving the suspension that may be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team,” Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo Says Jorge Jesus Broke His Word

The dispute began after Ronaldo was an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27.

According to Cristiano Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus had initially agreed that he would not feature in the Norway and Denmark matches as part of a plan to manage his fitness. But Ronaldo says the situation changed on match day.

He claims Jesus told him he would play for around 30 minutes against Norway.

“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said. “The coach had broken his word.”

Ronaldo then left the Portugal camp in Copenhagen ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark.

The episode immediately triggered speculation about a major rift between Portugal’s captain and his new manager. Jorge Jesus has rejected the suggestion that there was such an agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Eight-Point Agreement That Ronaldo Says Fell Apart

Ronaldo says he subsequently met Jesus, with Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho and his strategic adviser Tiago Craveiro also involved.

According to Ronaldo’s account, an eight-point document was prepared outlining how Jesus would explain the situation publicly.

Among the points, Ronaldo says Jesus agreed to state that the player never demanded minutes, accepted the coach’s decisions, and behaved professionally.

The document also allegedly acknowledged that asking a player of Ronaldo’s stature to warm up without ultimately bringing him onto the pitch had been a mistake.

Most significantly, Ronaldo says Jesus had agreed to make clear that he wanted the Portugal captain in his squad.

But Ronaldo claims the coach’s subsequent press conference bore little resemblance to their private conversation.

“I heard expressions and an aggressiveness that I do not believe I deserved,” Ronaldo said, describing a dramatically different tone from their private meeting.

“It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” he added. “I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”

Jorge Jesus has since denied that such an agreement was made.

Ronaldo Admits He Was Wrong to Walk Out

Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo accepted responsibility for leaving the Portugal camp.

He apologized to his teammates and supporters and said the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him rather than reduce any sanction.

“The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them. I believe the punishment should not be reduced,” Ronaldo said.

The Portugal captain also apologized for failing to acknowledge traveling supporters after the match against Norway.

“At the end of the match I only wanted everything to finish with the victory and to be alone,” he said. “A failing that is solely my responsibility and that should not have happened.”

Ronaldo said his decision to leave came from his belief that remaining with the squad after the breakdown in trust could have damaged the team.

Cristiano Ronaldo Nearly Retired From Portugal

Perhaps the biggest revelation in Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement was that he had already considered ending his international career.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he had written a retirement letter following Portugal’s World Cup campaign and was close to making the decision official.

He says Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença persuaded him to reconsider during the flight home from North America.

Ronaldo also said he supported Jesus becoming Portugal’s head coach after working with him at Al-Nassr.

“I told him that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” Ronaldo said of Jesus’ appointment.

That makes the current dispute particularly striking. Ronaldo had initially viewed Jesus as the right man for Portugal, only for their relationship to become the center of an international controversy months later.

Ronaldo Says Portugal Farewell Will Come, but Not Yet

Despite the explosive fallout, Ronaldo insists his Portugal career is not over.

The veteran forward said he expects one or more farewell matches, but he doesn’t want his immediate focus to be retirement.

“When I think of the national team, what I really think of is competing,” Ronaldo said.

His record with Portugal remains extraordinary. Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 international appearances, making him the men’s world-record holder for both goals and caps. He has also helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles.

Ronaldo said he wants the opportunity to decide how his international career ends.

“I can promise all my fans, naturally and especially all Portuguese people, that we will have one or more farewell matches; there will be time for that,” he said.

“But when I think of the national team, what I really think of is competing.”

For now, the door remains open. Jesus has indicated that Ronaldo can return to the Portugal setup, while Ronaldo says he will be available once he serves any suspension.

But after a public breakdown involving accusations of broken promises, an alleged eight-point agreement and an extraordinary walkout, the relationship between Portugal’s most decorated player and its head coach remains under intense scrutiny.
