José Mourinho’s Real Madrid Survive Inter Milan Champions League Chaos

The Champions League has barely begun, but the pressure is already enormous. José Mourinho’s Real Madrid survived a furious Inter Milan fightback to win 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, while Bayern Munich have made it brutally clear that anything short of European glory will feel like another disappointment.

Madrid’s victory came in José Mourinho’s emotional return against his former club, but the scoreline barely tells the story.

Kylian Mbappé and Fede Valverde struck inside the opening 23 minutes before Inter turned the game into a siege. Carlos Augusto pulled one back in the second half, and Thibaut Courtois eventually produced a crucial late save to prevent an equalizer.

For Real Madrid, it was a winning start. For Inter, it was a night of missed opportunities.

Madrid Were Outplayed for Long Stretches

Real Madrid’s Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Inter lost possession. Brahim Díaz released the French forward, who finished to give Madrid the lead with their first shot of the match.

Nine minutes later, Valverde doubled the advantage after Josep Martínez attempted to pull the ball back on his line. Valverde pounced, won possession and rolled the ball into an exposed net.

The bizarre part was that Inter had been controlling much of the match.

The Italian side reportedly enjoyed around 70% possession and produced 12 shots to Madrid’s three before halftime. Inter continued attacking after the break, eventually getting their reward when Lautaro Martínez created the opening for Carlos Augusto to make it 2-1.

Then came Courtois.

The Madrid goalkeeper denied Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 89th minute as Inter pushed desperately for an equalizer, preserving a result that could easily have gone the other way.

Mourinho Calls It “Madness”

José Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu was always going to attract attention, but the former Real Madrid boss was left describing the contest as a chaotic spectacle.

His assessment was blunt: the game was “mad” but not necessarily the kind of madness he enjoys.

Inter Milan had repeatedly found space around Madrid’s midfield, while José Mourinho also questioned the use of Trent Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role.

Even Madrid’s own players admitted they had chances to make life easier. Jude Bellingham said he missed two clear opportunities as the hosts struggled to turn their early advantage into control.

The Bernabéu crowd also expressed its frustration, with whistles heard by the final whistle and Vinícius Júnior among those feeling the pressure.

Bayern Say This Has to Be Their Year

While Madrid escaped, Bayern Munich enter the competition with an entirely different burden: expectation.

Bayern were knocked out by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain in a dramatic semifinal last season after a 5-4 defeat in the first leg and a 1-1 draw in Munich.

Harry Kane believes the time for near-misses is over.

“We’re coming into this season now saying that it needs to be our year,” Kane told TNT Sports. “We need to find a way to get it done.”

The England captain has already collected major trophies since moving to Munich, but another Champions League failure would keep one major question hanging over Bayern.

Squad Depth Could Decide Everything

Vincent Kompany has identified the Champions League as one of Bayern’s primary objectives alongside the Bundesliga and German Cup.

But former Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger believes squad depth could become the club’s biggest weakness during another punishing campaign.

Bayern added Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown during the summer, seeking versatility across multiple positions. Yet uncertainty surrounding Jamal Musiala adds another layer of concern.

Musiala recently returned to action after revealing a neurological disorder following a pre-season collapse.

Schweinsteiger believes Bayern could still be one or two players short, particularly when European knockout football demands tactical flexibility and quality options from the bench.

The Champions League Race Is Already Heating Up

Real Madrid have shown they can win even when the performance is messy. Bayern, meanwhile, are entering the tournament determined to eliminate the “almost” label that has followed them in recent seasons.

And that could make this Champions League campaign particularly explosive.

Madrid have the history. Bayern have the hunger. PSG have the crown.

Now the chase for Europe’s biggest prize has begun, and there is very little room for mistakes.
