Michel Platini Demands Gianni Infantino ‘Must Go’ in Explosive FIFA Attack

Michel Platini has launched a blistering attack on FIFA president Gianni Infantino, accusing the football chief of failing to respect the sport’s rules and declaring that he “must go.”

A bitter feud at the top of world football has erupted into another major confrontation, with former UEFA president and French football icon Michel Platini publicly calling for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to leave his position.

In a scathing interview published Sunday, Platini accused Infantino of failing in his responsibility as the guardian of football’s rules and questioned the FIFA leadership’s handling of several controversies surrounding the sport.

“Economic affairs are one thing, but Infantino has failed because he is the guarantor of the rules of the game and he didn’t respect them,” Platini said in comments reported by French media.

His conclusion was blunt: “He must go.”

Platini Targets FIFA World Cup Controversies

Platini’s criticism focused heavily on incidents surrounding the recent FIFA World Cup in North America.

The former UEFA chief particularly objected to extended hydration breaks during matches, arguing that some lasted several minutes and broadcasters used them for advertising.

He also criticized the extended halftime interval during the final and the controversy surrounding the suspension of a red-card ban involving United States forward Folarin Balogun.

Platini argued that such decisions undermine FIFA’s credibility because the organization is supposed to enforce the rules consistently.

“The ad breaks are not in the rules, the 30-minute half-time break in the final is not in the rules, and the red card, that’s the worst,” he said.

For Platini, the issue is bigger than individual decisions. He believes FIFA’s leadership has a responsibility to ensure that football’s regulations are applied without political or commercial interference.

FIFA Faces Growing Pressure

Infantino’s leadership has faced increasing scrutiny over FIFA’s financial and governance plans.

One major flashpoint has been the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprises initiative, which reportedly involved bringing private investment into FIFA-related events and competitions.

European football’s governing body UEFA has opposed the plan and has previously threatened stronger action if the initiative moved forward.

Platini suggested that institutional opposition could eventually become a serious problem for Infantino.

“It won’t be sporting institutions that sort this out and bring him down,” he said. “If UEFA want to bring down Infantino, it will be through the courts.”

Other football confederations, including CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, have also been reported as putting pressure on FIFA’s leadership.

Infantino is seeking another term as FIFA president, making the growing criticism particularly significant.

‘He Always Loved Money and Power’

Platini’s attack is also deeply personal.

The French football legend, who previously worked alongside Infantino at UEFA, said he had long believed Infantino was drawn to influence and financial power.

“I always knew that he loved money and power,” Platini said.

Their relationship deteriorated dramatically after Platini’s own FIFA ambitions collapsed amid a 2015 corruption investigation.

Platini had been seeking the FIFA presidency after the downfall of Sepp Blatter, but allegations surrounding a $2 million payment to the Frenchman derailed his campaign. Platini was eventually acquitted of wrongdoing in 2025, but the controversy forced him out of football administration at the time.

Infantino subsequently won the FIFA presidency in 2016.

Platini now argues that Infantino did not personally defeat him but instead benefited from the circumstances that ended his campaign.

“He didn’t bring me down, he benefitted from it,” Platini said.

Platini Is Taking Infantino to Court

The dispute has now moved beyond public criticism.

Platini is suing Infantino, along with former FIFA officials Marco Villiger and Domenico Scala, in France. The lawsuit seeks compensation for what Platini alleges prevented him from becoming FIFA president in 2015.

Platini has accused the defendants of alleged wrongdoing, including conspiracy, false accusations and influence peddling. Those are allegations, not established findings against the defendants.

The legal battle adds another explosive dimension to an already tense relationship between two figures who once worked within the same football administration.

A New Battle for FIFA’s Future

Platini’s intervention comes at a potentially pivotal moment for FIFA.

Infantino remains one of the most powerful figures in global football, but criticism over governance, finances, and the administration of major tournaments could grow more important as the next FIFA presidential election approaches.

Platini’s message leaves little room for ambiguity: he believes Infantino has crossed a line by failing to uphold football’s own rules.
