Indian Actresses in International Music Videos

Danny Boyle’s multiple-award winning Slumdog Millionaire taught aspiring actors in India one impactful lesson – that if a girl from suburban (almost out of) Mumbai without a godfather can make it to Hollywood with panache, then the world’s a stage for those wanting to make it to Hindi cinema, mainstream or indie. Kudos to Freida Pinto! But little do a lot of people know about her presence in pop star Bruno Mars’s music video.

We’ve compiled a short list of other such actresses from Indian cinema who made a commendable foray into music videos of Western pop stars.

Freida Pinto – Bruno Mars’s “Gorilla”

While Freida Pinto maintained a demure disposition in Slumdog Millionaire, a diametrically opposite amount of sex appeal is donned by the actress in Bruno Mars’s song “Gorilla”. A dive bar, a kitschy light setup, a slender ramp and a Spanish character named Isabella is all that you get when you click on the video link below. At your own risk, though!

Bipasha Basu – Jay Sean’s “Stolen”

Somewhere at the beginning of Bipasha Basu’s career, while she took off with the Bollywood blockbuster Jism, she featured in Indo-British hip-hopper Jay Sean’s single “Stolen” from his debut studio album titled Me Against Myself. In the video, because Bipasha gets too famous for Sean to handle, Sean hooks up with another girl. How dare he?

Shahana Goswami – Dido’s “Let’s Do the Things We Normally Do”

Dido’s 2008 album Safe Trip Home featured the song “Let’s Do the Things We Normally Do” where she decided to go global and let an Indian filmmaker shoot the music video for it. The song thus features Shahana Goswami as a taxi driver in Mumbai, experiencing things that make her smile, while going through the daily motions of life.

Mallika Sherawat – Bruno Mars’s “Whatta Man”

Mallika Sherawat is gloriously infamous when it comes to sharing her “international” (read Hollywood) carrier plans at international forums among various other such bloopers. And, oh, how can one forget her impeccable Americanish-British-Confusedish accent? That, on another day. However, Bruno Mars seems unfazed! In a parody video for humour website Funny or Die, Mars is seen saving the damsel in diss-tress, Mallika Sherawat. Whatta man!
