Rising trend in crowd funded canine surgeries in India- a glimmer of hope

Amid wide reports of dogs being brutally murdered by either stoning them to death or thrashing little puppies to teach their mother a lesson, the latest reports of crowd-funded surgeries for canines in Chennai is a glimmer of hope for our furry friends and a faint hint that humanity still exists.

The story that has been doing rounds of the internet is that of a stray puppy Cracki. She frequented a gym in Thiruvanmiyur and her lively approach towards life and ever- wagging tail had won the heart of every regular visitor at the gym who simply adored her. Her name, Cracki, also originates from her ‘hyper crack’ living.

It was this love for her that all the gym staffs and members, even the security guards too gladly opened their wallet when Cracki was left paralysed by a hit-and-run incident. But, surgeries cost around the same for humans and animals. The very first MRI scan alone scaled a bill of Rs. 15,000.

Animal lover Anuradha Chawla, who works out at the gym and was co-coordinating Cracki’s surgery funding quickly realised that they have to quickly expand their donor pool.

“I did the first thing I could think of. I put up a post on Facebook,” says Chawla to media. Soon she realised Cracki was not the only dog to meet such a fat but there are hundreds like her who waiting for animal lovers to donate some funds for their betterment.

Forums like The Pound Chennai Animal Welfare Trust on social media are finding an increasing demand for ‘crowd-funded’ canine surgeries, showing a rise in this trend.

The surgeries involve basic sterilisation procedures to complex orthopaedic surgeries. The homeless mongrels and pets who otherwise have been living a life of helplessness and despair have found a miracle support from animal lovers from as far as Kolkata and the US.

“Even though this happened over six months ago, I still get messages asking how Cracki is doing,” Chawla told media, who eventually grew so fond of this canine that she adopted her.

Chawla says that the irony is that while all donors love animals, a large section of them are not pet owners. “Some of them tell me this is their way of loving a dog because for whatever reason they just can’t have one.”

Facebook has been successful in bringing many dog lovers coming together for the common interest. Frequent posts on the dog’s progress are often posted online to show transparency and keep multiple donors updated at the same time. A quick look at the comments section would be enough to understand the pain dog lovers take to ensure proper treatment for them.

There are many forums that collect crowd funding to help dogs recuperate at their medical centres. Animal lovers can also request snapshots of bills of their contribution from the medical procedures. It would always be good to pay a visit to the furry patient you are helping rehabilitate.
