‘Elsinore’ Trailer Puts Andrew Scott at the Center of a Haunting True Story of Ian Charleson

Andrew Scott is stepping into one of the most emotionally demanding roles of his career in Elsinore, and the newly released trailer offers the first major look at the actor’s transformation into late British stage and screen star Ian Charleson.

Released by Focus Features, the Elsinore trailer introduces a drama built around Ian Charleson’s final years and his extraordinary turn as Hamlet at London’s National Theatre. Directed by Simon Stone and written by Stephen Beresford, Elsinore is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on November 20, 2026.

The film follows Charleson at a pivotal point in his life, when an opportunity to play Shakespeare’s Hamlet collides with a devastating personal reality. Charleson had stepped into the role after Daniel Day-Lewis left the National Theatre production during a performance.

According to the film’s official premise, Ian Charleson confronts his mortality as he prepares for what would become a defining stage performance.

Andrew Scott Faces Ian Charleson’s Final Chapter

Scott, known for All of Us Strangers and Fleabag, plays Charleson, while Olivia Colman portrays Margaret Johnson, a doctor connected to Charleson during the HIV/AIDS crisis.

The ensemble also includes Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Matthew Beard, Joe Locke, Monica Dolan, Juliet Stevenson and Peter Mullan. 

The Elsinore trailer hints at the emotional conflict at the heart of Elsinore: an actor preparing to perform one of Shakespeare’s most famous characters while confronting questions about illness, mortality, friendship and artistic legacy.

Rather than treating Hamlet simply as another role, the film connects Ian Charleson’s own circumstances with Shakespeare’s exploration of death and human vulnerability.

From Telluride to Toronto, ‘Elsinore’ Is Building Momentum

Elsinore made its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in September before heading to the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received the International People’s Choice Award.

Early critical reaction has focused on Scott’s performance. Variety’s coverage described his work as a layered and moving portrayal, while other festival reactions have positioned the performance as a potential awards-season highlight.

The film’s festival reception adds weight to the Elsinore trailer as Focus Features begins its theatrical campaign.

A Story About Theatre, Mortality and the Power of Performance

At its core, Elsinore is not simply a conventional actor biopic. The film uses Charleson’s Hamlet performance to explore the relationship between art and mortality.

Stone, whose previous work includes The Dig, directs the film, while Beresford, the writer behind Pride, provides the screenplay. Andrew Scott also serves as a producer.

Focus Features has set the North American theatrical release for November 20, with the movie expected to expand into additional markets around Thanksgiving and through December. STUDIOCANAL will handle theatrical releases in several international territories, including the UK, where the film is scheduled for January 29, 2027.

With Andrew Scott leading a celebrated ensemble with Olivia Colman and Elsinore arriving after strong festival reactions, the Elsinore trailer has put the Ian Charleson story firmly on the radar ahead of the 2026 awards season.
