Amazon introduces furniture segment, to set up 5 warehouses

Amazon India has forayed into furniture sales and according to reports, the e-commerce major has plans to set up five more fulfilment centres or warehouses in the country, before the end of the current year.

Sumit Sahay, the director of category management, Amazon India, said, “Currently, Amazon has 22 fulfilment centres across the country. We have just launched its range of furniture products and would set up three out of the five FCs in Tamil Nadu.”

The online retailer, recently crossed the milestone of 1-lakh sellers on an overall basis, is logging a growth in excess of 150% after registering a whopping 250% increase in sales during 2015.

“We see the momentum continuing for the rest of the year,” Sahay added.

The warehouse space with the e-commerce giant would increase to 7.5 million cubic feet from the present 6 million cubic feet by the end of the current year, he added.

Sahay stated that the option of buying furniture is available only in about 20 cities. Buyers would be able to place orders only if they reside within a certain distance from the seller.
