His resignation takes effect October 27, when his current medical leave ends.

Drug Allegations Were Reportedly Examined

WRAL previously reported that investigators questioned people connected to the football program about allegations involving Steve Belichick, including whether he had used drugs while working at UNC or provided drugs to at least one player. Investigators also reportedly asked questions concerning possible relationships between staff members and players.

Those reports concern allegations and interview questions, not criminal findings against Belichick.

UNC has not publicly detailed the specific conduct that led to Steve Belichick’s departure.

Michael Lombardi Already Resigned

Steve Belichick is now the second major figure associated with Bill Belichick’s UNC operation to leave amid the investigation.

General manager Michael Lombardi resigned on September 3, after being placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation. Lombardi was a longtime Belichick associate and had been brought to North Carolina as part of the coach’s transition from the NFL to college football.

Lombardi’s departure added to questions about the internal structure of a program that Bill Belichick was hired to rebuild.

Despite the departures, UNC said the investigation found no evidence of a broader systemic failure.
