Black Myth: Zhong Kui Gameplay Reveal Sends Fans Into a Frenzy

Game Science has finally shown extended gameplay from Black Myth: Zhong Kui, revealing its demon-slaying hero, brutal combat, and stunning environments in the highly anticipated follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong.

The Black Myth franchise is back, and Game Science has just given players their biggest look yet at what could become one of the most anticipated action RPGs of the coming years.

On August 20, Game Science released approximately 15 minutes of gameplay footage from Black Myth: Zhong Kui, offering the first extended look at its upcoming third-person action role-playing game.

The reveal immediately puts the spotlight on the game’s new protagonist, combat system, and mythological world while raising a huge question for fans of Black Myth: Wukong: can Game Science repeat the phenomenon that made its previous title a global gaming sensation?

Black Myth: Zhong Kui Gameplay Finally Revealed

The newly released footage showcases exploration, enemy encounters, combat sequences, and several characters players are expected to encounter during the adventure.

Unlike Black Myth: Wukong, whose hero was inspired by the legendary Monkey King, Zhong Kui appears human, marking a dramatic visual and thematic shift for the franchise.

That difference could also have major gameplay consequences.

The footage shows the protagonist engaging enemies with a combat style that appears distinct from Wukong’s fighting system, giving fans an early indication that Game Science is not simply reskinning its previous formula.

The environments shown in the gameplay footage also suggest that the studio is once again aiming for a visually spectacular interpretation of Chinese and Eastern mythology.

Who Is Zhong Kui?

At the center of the new game is Zhong Kui, a legendary figure in Eastern mythology traditionally associated with hunting and defeating demons.

Game Science first announced Black Myth: Zhong Kui at Gamescom 2025, immediately generating enormous interest because of the success of Black Myth: Wukong.

Choosing Zhong Kui gives the developers a completely different mythological foundation to explore while keeping the franchise connected to legendary Chinese folklore.

For players who loved Wukong’s combination of mythology, exploration, and punishing action combat, the new game could offer a familiar formula with a radically different hero.

Game Science Warns Fans: This Is Not the Final Game

There is an important catch with the new gameplay reveal.

Game Science emphasized that Black Myth: Zhong Kui remains in early development. The footage was recorded from a work-in-progress build running in a 21:9 aspect ratio, meaning the visuals, mechanics, and overall presentation could change significantly before release.

The developer specifically warned that the final version may differ from what appears in the footage.

That caveat matters especially for fans analyzing every frame of the gameplay video. Animations, visual effects, enemy behavior, and performance may change as development continues.

Can Zhong Kui Become the Next Wukong?

Black Myth: Wukong became one of the biggest success stories in modern gaming, creating enormous expectations for anything carrying the Black Myth name.

Zhong Kui therefore faces a difficult challenge.

The gameplay footage suggests Game Science is building another ambitious third-person ARPG filled with mythology, spectacular environments and intense combat. But the studio has not yet revealed a firm Black Myth: Zhong Kui release date, leaving fans waiting for more information.

For now, the 15-minute showcase feels less like a launch announcement and more like a warning shot.

Game Science has shown that Black Myth is not a one-game experiment. The next chapter is already taking shape, and if this early footage is any indication, Zhong Kui could be one of gaming’s biggest upcoming threats to the action-RPG throne.
