Taylor Swift has unveiled a cryptic 13-second preview of her “Patient Zero” music video, revealing Hollywood stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, a mysterious grave, and a storyline that has already sent Swifties into overdrive.
Taylor Swift is once again turning a music release into a full-scale mystery.
Just hours before the release of her new single “Patient Zero,” Swift gave fans their first glimpse of the accompanying music video, and the brief teaser raises far more questions than it answers.
The 13-second preview debuted on CBS Mornings on September 24, and Swift later shared it. The full video is scheduled to premiere during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27.
Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell Join Taylor Swift
Patient Zero’s biggest teaser reveal is the appearance of two major Hollywood stars: Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Taylor Swift, Dakota Johnson, and Colin Farrell appear in a series of atmospheric scenes that suggest a dramatic narrative rather than a conventional music-video performance.
The preview begins with Swift in a dark, industrial-looking bathroom, then cuts to underwater footage of two women. Another shot shows two women standing near a male statue, while later images shift dramatically to a snow-covered cemetery.
The final scenes show Swift and Johnson in black, standing near a grave.
Farrell also emerges from a vehicle before all three stars appear together in a dimly lit setting.
The teaser does not reveal the song’s lyrics or explain the relationship between the three characters, leaving much of the story deliberately open to interpretation.
The Grave May Be the Biggest Clue
One of the most striking images shows black roses placed near a snow-covered headstone.
The gravestone appears to carry the dates 1989–2022, along with the words “Gone too Soon” and a reference to a daughter. The name itself is obscured.
That detail has immediately prompted fan theories about who the grave represents.
However, Swift has not publicly explained the cemetery sequence, and no one has confirmed that the dates or imagery refer to a real person or event.
The video’s dark visual language appears to contrast sharply with the more colorful aesthetic associated with portions of The Life of a Showgirl era.

Swifties May Have Spotted the Dakota Johnson Clue
Fans have also returned to Swift’s recent appearance in an Emmys 2026 Law & Order: Special Victims Unit sketch.
During the appearance, Swift delivered a series of cryptic clues, including the words “North or South.” Fans subsequently connected the directional reference with Dakota Johnson’s name through “North Dakota” and “South Dakota.”
Johnson later confirmed that she and Swift are longtime friends and said working together on the project was enjoyable.
That makes the teaser’s reveal less of a completely unexpected cameo and more evidence of Swift’s elaborate clue-dropping strategy.
An Oscar-Winning Cinematographer Is Behind the Visuals
The production also has an impressive filmmaking pedigree.
According to reports surrounding the teaser, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki worked on the video. Lubezki is known for films including Birdman and The Revenant, both of which earned him Academy Awards for cinematography.
Swift herself directed the “Patient Zero” video, adding another significant project to her growing body of work behind the camera.
Her directorial work is also being recognized at this year’s VMAs, where she is set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors.
‘Patient Zero’ Leads Taylor Swift’s Showgirl Encore
The video arrives alongside a major new chapter in Swift’s current music era.
“Patient Zero” is one of four new tracks included on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of her 2025 album.
The additional songs are “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.”
Swift has said she wrote the songs after traveling to Sweden to celebrate the success of The Life of a Showgirl with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback.
Now, with the single arriving Friday and its mysterious video coming to the VMAs Sunday, Swift has once again transformed a song release into an event.
And judging by the grave, the Hollywood cast, and those unexplained final images, “Patient Zero” may be only the beginning of another Taylor Swift mystery.
