‘Sons of Anarchy’ Cast Reunites for Charlie Hunnam’s Wild New FX Series ‘Legends’

More than a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended its seven-season run, Charlie Hunnam is bringing the beloved outlaw motorcycle drama’s cast back together but with a major twist. FX has ordered Legends, a meta-thriller that will see Hunnam and several original Sons of Anarchy stars play fictionalized versions of themselves.

The project reunites Charlie Hunnam with Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi. More cast members are expected to join the series.

Created and written by Charlie Hunnam, FX’s Legends centers on a fictional reunion of the Sons of Anarchy cast at a fan convention more than 10 years after the original series ended.

But the nostalgic gathering quickly takes a dangerous turn.

According to the official premise, the boundaries between the actors’ real lives and their iconic television roles begin to collapse when the reunited cast encounters a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they faced on Sons of Anarchy.

The unusual setup gives FX a way to revisit the world of SAMCRO without simply resurrecting characters who were killed during the original show’s violent run.

Sons of Anarchy Stars Return, As Themselves

Charlie Hunnam will lead the project, while Perlman, Sagal, Siff, Boone Junior, Flanagan, Coates and Rossi are all returning. Their involvement is likely to generate major excitement among longtime SOA fans.

The original series followed Jax Teller, played by Hunnam, as he grappled with his father’s violent legacy and the direction of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club.

Running from 2008 through 2014, the FX drama became a cultural phenomenon and one of the network’s biggest hits.

Rather than attempting a conventional revival, FX’s Legends turns the reunion itself into the story.

FX Entertainment president Nick Grad described the project as both a tribute to the original series and a playful reinvention of what audiences believe they know about its stars.

Why Legends Could Be the Sons of Anarchy Revival Fans Never Expected

A traditional Sons of Anarchy revival would face an obvious problem: many of its most important characters died.

Jax Teller’s death brought the original story to a definitive conclusion, while numerous other major characters also met violent ends throughout the series.

Legends effectively sidesteps that problem by placing the actors — rather than their former characters — at the center of the action.

The result could give fans familiar faces, references, and nostalgia while allowing Hunnam to tell an entirely new story.

Hunnam and Jonathan Groff are developing the series, with executive producers Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. Kurt Sutter, who created Sons of Anarchy, is not involved.

Sons of Anarchy Universe Continues

Legends becomes the latest project connected to the Sons of Anarchy franchise following Mayans M.C., which ran for five seasons before concluding in 2023.

FX Productions and 20th Television are producing Legends, which will stream through FX and Hulu. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

For fans who thought the Sons of Anarchy story was permanently over, Hunnam’s bizarre new reunion could be the closest thing yet to a return to Charming, only this time, the actors themselves may be riding into danger.
