Either as a parallel career move or as a trick to expose their undeniable singing prowess, a lot of B-town’s actors decided to sing. The desire for the uber-cool and internationally popular title of ‘actor-singer’ got them sharing their talent with the world. We are not denying that Bollywood does have its share of some soulful and talented actors-slash-singers but does that really qualify all of them to get inside the studio and dish out a song? Will they still sound the same without auto-tunes and glitch fixes? Check out for yourself and decide.
Priyanka Chopra: Exotic
Let’s not even get into the first track that Priyanka Chopra launched her vocal career with – “In My City”. If anything, her ‘city’ technically is Jamshedpur, where she was born, and if you heard the song you’d want to evict her from every city there is. Not for the song, really. But for her contribution as a singer. Then came her global hit with Pitbull, “Exotic”, which had nothing exotic about it except may be the fact that Pitbulls are an expensive breed to afford, hence exotic. She’s been markedly improving as an actor with remarkable performances in Saat Khoon Maaf, Kaminey, Barfi, among others. Best, she stuck to that.

Sridevi: O Meri Chandni
Trying to keep abreast with Jolly Mukherjee’s deep baritone of a voice, Sridevi had a tough time keeping in sync, her tune derailing quite embarrassingly. Good thing being, the epiphany dawned and she decided to discontinue her singing career from then onwards. And, married Boney Kapoor! Well played! But, what compelled Yash Chopra to make Sridevi lend her voice to the song is a long lost saga that was shut in a coffin and drowned in the Red Sea.

Kareena Kapoor: Jab Nahi Aaya The Tum
Dev, a Fardeen Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer, was a film that went unnoticed beyond compare. But what went even more unacknowledged was the fact that Kapoor was the voice behind one of the supposedly heart-rending tracks composed by Aadesh Srivastav. Though airy, her voice sounds like a Japanese school girl competing in a nursery rhyme contest. Frankly, no push and no power in the voice, therefore a decent composition didn’t deliver the longing-packed punch.

Abhay Deol: Senorita
All’s well when Farhan Aktar begins singing, followed by Hrithik Roshan’s voice. Then it’s Abhay Deol’s turn to shine. Only, he doesn’t even come close to ‘s’ in shine. If it were a recitation competition in school, Deol’s parents would’ve been the over-confident sardars, like in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, yelling “Number one hai jee, number one”. Then, Deol would walk off stage cavalierly and roll one. The smoke would further choke his vocal cords and he would swear off singing. “Senorita” was an eye opener, we’re guessing!

Shahrukh Khan: Apun Bola
Although the uncouth style of singing fit Shahrukh Khan’s tapori image in the film Josh, if the song was heard for more than 30 seconds you’d want to pour wax into your ears. However, since Khan knows what he’s doing he doesn’t attempt a song that needed to be sung in pitch, and hence we placed this last in our list.
