Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s Grammy Winning Album Was Independently Produced
While collecting the award on stage for the Best Rap Album The Heist at the 56th Grammys 2014, Macklemore proudly announced, “I want to say we made this album without a record label, we made it independently and we appreciate all the support.” For the album, which was released in 2012, the duo bagged awards like ‘New Artist’, ‘Best Rap Song’ (for “Thrift Shop”) and ‘Best Rap Performance’ (for “Thrift Shop”).
By overtaking popular albums like Kanye West’s Yeezus and Jay Z’s Magna Carta… Holy Grail in the rap album category, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have reiterated the power of indie music without the backing force of a record label.
Then of course, French electronica collective Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories won ‘Album of the Year’, “Get Lucky” won ‘Record of the Year’, and Lorde’s “Royals” was awarded ‘Song of the Year’ (video below).
