Sadiq Khan Condemns Wireless Festival Booking of Kanye West Amid Growing Backlash

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has issued a strong statement condemning the decision to book Kanye West, also known as Ye, as the headline act for all three nights of the 2026 Wireless Festival.

In an official response, Khan made it clear that City Hall had no involvement in the booking, emphasizing that the decision was made solely by festival organisers. He added that Kanye West’s past actions and statements are “offensive and wrong” and do not reflect London’s values.

Ye is scheduled to perform at Finsbury Park on July 10, 11, and 12, marking his first UK performances in more than a decade.

Backlash From Jewish Organisations and Community Leaders

The announcement has triggered swift criticism from several prominent Jewish organisations. The Jewish Leadership Council described the decision as “deeply irresponsible,” citing Kanye West’s history of antisemitic remarks and controversial behavior.

Other groups, including the Campaign Against Antisemitism and the Board of Deputies of British Jews, also voiced concerns. Some leaders have gone further, calling for authorities to consider barring the artist from entering the UK.

The criticism comes amid heightened concerns about antisemitism in Britain, with community leaders pointing to recent incidents and urging greater accountability from public platforms and event organisers.

A History of Controversy Surrounding Kanye West

West’s controversies date back several years, particularly his antisemitic social media posts in 2022, which led to suspensions from major platforms and severed ties with brands like Adidas and Balenciaga.

In 2025, his rhetoric escalated further with inflammatory online statements and the release of a song that was rejected by major streaming platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music.

Earlier this year, Kanye West issued a public apology via a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal, attributing his past behavior to mental health challenges, including bipolar disorder. However, the timing of the apology, coinciding withhis new album ‘Bully’ release, has been met with skepticism.

Political Pressure Mounts Ahead of Festival

Political voices have also joined the debate. Ed Davey has called for the UK government to consider banning West from entering the country, stressing the need to take antisemitism seriously.

Despite the mounting backlash, festival organisers have yet to announce any changes to the lineup.

The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between artistic freedom and social responsibility. While major music festivals often aim to attract global stars, the decision to platform controversial figures can carry reputational risks.

As the Wireless Festival 2026 approaches, pressure is likely to grow on organisers to reassess their choices, while city leaders and advocacy groups continue to voice their concerns.
