Is Jimmy Kimmel really preparing to say goodbye? A bombshell report claiming Jimmy Kimmel Live! could end after the 2026-27 season has sent shockwaves through late-night television, but ABC is pushing back hard, insisting the claim is “inaccurate” and “purely speculative.”
The report, first published by Page Six and followed by TMZ, claimed Kimmel’s contract would not be renewed when his current deal expires in May 2027. That would potentially bring the comedian’s run on ABC to an end after more than two decades.
For now, however, there is no confirmed cancellation.
ABC Fires Back at Kimmel Cancellation Report
ABC Entertainment issued a blunt response after the reports surfaced.
“This information is inaccurate; any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative,” an ABC spokesperson said.
Jimmy Kimmel’s existing contract runs through May 2027, as Disney announced a one-year extension in December 2025, meaning the host is currently contracted to remain with ABC through at least the end of that television season.
That distinction matters: a contract expiration date is not the same as a cancellation announcement.
Still, the speculation has immediately raised questions about what happens next.
Why the Rumor Has Exploded Now
Jimmy Kimmel has maintained unusually flexible year-to-year arrangements in recent years, giving him more control over his future than many traditional network hosts.
TMZ reported that staff has discussed Kimmel developing pitches for other television projects and podcasts. Kimmel has also previously spoken about the possibility of eventually walking away from late night.
But none of that establishes that Jimmy Kimmel Live! is ending.
The show returned from its summer break on September 8, 2026, with Kimmel marking its 4,000th episode. The return also gave the comedian another chance to address the political controversies that have followed him throughout his recent years on ABC.

The possibility of an eventual exit comes after one of the most turbulent periods in Kimmel’s career.
In September 2025, ABC temporarily suspended the show following Kimmel’s comments about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The program returned less than a week later after Disney said it had held an internal review, and Jimmy Kimmel subsequently continued using his monologues to attack political figures, including Donald Trump.
The controversy also became part of a larger fight over media independence.
Disney and ABC have since sued the Federal Communications Commission over what they describe as retaliatory pressure and an unusually early review of broadcast licenses. Reuters reported that the companies accused the Trump administration and FCC of actions that threatened editorial independence, allegations the FCC disputes.
Yet sources cited in the reports about Kimmel’s future have stressed that politics is not necessarily behind the speculation.

Disney has been undergoing broader restructuring and cost-cutting efforts, creating another possible explanation for uncertainty around expensive late-night programming.
At the same time, the late-night landscape is already being reshaped.
Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show is ending, adding to the sense that the traditional network late-night model is under enormous pressure.
Kimmel, meanwhile, remains one of the most established figures in American late-night. He has hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! since 2003, making the program a fixture of ABC’s nighttime schedule.
Rosie O’Donnell Adds Another Twist
Recent guest-hosting developments have also fueled conversation about the show’s future.
Rosie O’Donnell recently stepped in for Jimmy Kimmel during his break, drawing strong attention and generating viral moments, including political comedy aimed at Trump.
Her successful guest-hosting run showed ABC can generate interest around alternative late-night voices, although there is no indication Rosie O’Donnell is being positioned as Jimmy Kimmel’s replacement.
For now, Kimmel remains firmly in the chair.
Is This Really the End of Jimmy Kimmel?
Not yet.
The May 2027 contract deadline is real, but the claim that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will definitely end then remains unconfirmed. ABC has publicly rejected that conclusion, and Kimmel himself has returned to the show for its latest season.
