Incidentally in time for the upcoming general elections that’s set to take place in April, Shillong-based gospel collective Shillong Chamber Choir released a music video on March 20 for their single titled “Just One”. The song talks about the power of an individual that can change the state of a country – by casting just one vote.

At times you may be led to believe the song’s skirting resemblance to the film Top Gun’s theme song, but it immediately drifts into a tangential tune with a crucial message coming from the North East; a message that confirms solidarity as one big nation. Shillong Chamber Choir was formed in 2001 by Neil Nongkynrih and came into national visibility nearly a decade later after winning the reality TV contest India’s Got Talent in 2010. Besides collecting international performances including a US tour in their kitty, they’ve done shows with tabla legend Zakir Hussain and also featured on the sixth season of the popular TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Though the North East has been often referred to as a land where music runs through the veins of its residents, the people reserve a special place for gospel music. Earlier we’d spoken to other gospel musicians like Mizoram-based band Magdalene about its relevance. The guitarist Victor said, “It happens many a-time that we play to a mixed audience outside the realm of a ‘Christian’ concert and our audiences, including people from other religions sing along despite the song lyrics being about Jesus. India is a secular state at the end of the day.”
