Sarah Snook Returns to HBO for Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ Reboot
HBO is bringing one of cinema’s most unsettling horror stories back to life, with Sarah Snook set to headline a new limited series inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film The Birds. The project will offer a contemporary take on the famous horror premise, blending psychological suspense, a criminal investigation, and seemingly inexplicable bird attacks.
Snook, best known for her Emmy-winning performance as Shiv Roy in HBO’s Succession, will play Myra Massey, a mother whose attempt to escape a difficult personal situation turns into a terrifying fight for survival.
The new series draws inspiration from both Alfred Hitchcock’s celebrated film and Daphne du Maurier’s original 1952 novella. While the project retains the central idea of birds becoming a deadly threat to humans, its storyline introduces a murder mystery and a complicated family drama.
What Is HBO’s New ‘The Birds’ Series About?
The story follows Myra Massey, who returns to her isolated hometown with her young daughter while attempting to escape a bitter custody battle.
But her homecoming isn’t just an attempt to rebuild her life. Myra secretly investigates the suspicious disappearance of a childhood friend, placing herself in the middle of a dangerous mystery.
As the investigation develops, a killer remains on the loose, and threats begin closing in. The situation becomes even more frightening when violent bird attacks start occurring, with the incidents apparently connected to the crime Myra is investigating.
Myra must then protect her daughter while confronting a threat that appears to defy explanation.
The combination of a missing-person mystery, a suspected killer, and attacks from nature gives HBO’s adaptation a different narrative framework from the original film, while retaining its unsettling central concept.

Sarah Snook Leads the Cast
Snook is currently the only confirmed cast member announced for the limited series. Her involvement is particularly notable because it marks a return to HBO following the enormous success of Succession.
She played Shiv Roy throughout the drama’s four-season run, earning three Emmy nominations and winning once. Her performance also brought her two Golden Globe awards.
The actress has continued building her television profile with projects including Peacock’s All Her Fault, which also earned her an Emmy nomination.
Her casting in The Birds places her at the center of another high-profile television production, this time in a genre that demands a combination of emotional intensity and suspense.
Further casting announcements and details about the supporting characters have not yet been revealed.
‘Watchmen’ Writer and ‘Harry Potter’ Producer Join HBO Project
Tom Spezialy, known for his work on HBO productions including Watchmen and The Leftovers, is developing the series. Spezialy has written the pilot and will serve as an executive producer.
David Heyman, the producer behind the Harry Potter film franchise and an executive producer on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, is also attached.
Sarah Snook, Danny Samit and Jennifer Gabler Rawlings will additionally serve as executive producers. Universal Global Television is co-producing the series with HBO.
The involvement of Tom Spezialy and Heyman brings considerable television and film experience to the adaptation, though the creative team has yet to reveal more about its visual approach or how closely it will follow Hitchcock’s original.
How the New Series Connects to Hitchcock’s Classic
First published in 1952, du Maurier’s short story inspired Hitchcock’s 1963 film starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Suzanne Pleshette and Jessica Tandy.
The movie follows a California coastal community facing increasingly aggressive bird attacks, with no clear explanation. Its use of practical effects, camera techniques, and carefully constructed suspense helped establish it as a landmark of horror cinema.
The film has influenced generations of filmmakers and remains an important reference point for natural and environmental horror.
HBO’s new interpretation will attempt to bring that premise to contemporary audiences while introducing a more character-driven mystery.
When Will ‘The Birds’ Premiere on HBO?
The limited series remains in early development, and HBO has not announced an official release date, production schedule, or premiere window.
With Snook attached and the principal creative team taking shape, the project is moving forward, but viewers will have to wait for further announcements before knowing when the new The Birds will arrive.
For horror fans, the combination of Hitchcock’s enduring premise, Sarah Snook’s return to HBO, and a mystery involving deadly bird attacks could make this one of the network’s most intriguing upcoming limited series.
