Stephen King’s Cult Horror Film 1408 Could Get a Sequel 19 Years Later

Nearly two decades after terrifying audiences, Stephen King’s psychological horror film 1408 could be preparing to reopen its most frightening door. A sequel to the 2007 movie is reportedly in early development, raising the possibility that John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson could return to the story of the infamous hotel room.

The project has reportedly attracted the involvement of original director Mikael Håfström, although no official announcement has confirmed the sequel, its creative team or its cast. If the reported development moves forward, fans could revisit one of King’s most unsettling cinematic adaptations.

1408 Sequel Reportedly in Early Development

The sequel news comes from entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman, who reported that a follow-up to 1408 is in development. According to the report, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson are among the original stars who could potentially reprise their roles, while Håfström is also reportedly connected to the project.

There is currently no confirmed storyline, production schedule or release date. It is also unclear whether the sequel would continue directly from the original film or introduce a new chapter involving the mysterious Dolphin Hotel.

For now, the project remains in the early stages, so fans should treat the casting and director reports as unconfirmed.

Why 1408 Still Haunts Horror Fans

Released in 2007, 1408 follows Mike Enslin, a writer who investigates supposedly haunted locations while remaining sceptical about the supernatural. His search for evidence eventually leads him to Room 1408 at New York’s Dolphin Hotel.

The hotel manager, Gerald Olin, warns Enslin that the room has a disturbing history and strongly advises him not to enter. But the writer dismisses the warnings and checks in, setting off a nightmare that rapidly becomes more terrifying than anything he expected.

Once inside, Enslin encounters increasingly disturbing events that blur the boundary between reality, memory and hallucination. The room appears to manipulate his surroundings and exploit his deepest fears, turning his investigation into a fight for survival and sanity.

Cusack delivered the central performance as Enslin, while Jackson played Olin, the manager who knows far more about the room than he initially reveals.

Could John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson Return?

The possibility of reuniting Cusack and Jackson is one of the most intriguing aspects of the reported 1408 sequel. Their contrasting performances helped establish the original film’s atmosphere, with Olin’s warnings providing an ominous introduction to the horror waiting inside the room.

However, the original story presents a challenge for any follow-up. A sequel would need a convincing way to revisit the Dolphin Hotel’s supernatural mystery without simply repeating the first film’s psychological terror.

One possibility would be to explore the room’s history or introduce another character drawn into its deadly trap. But without an officially announced plot, any discussion of the story’s direction remains speculation.

Stephen King’s Horror Stories Remain in Demand

The reported 1408 project arrives amid continued interest in Stephen King’s screen adaptations. His stories have inspired films and television projects across generations, with horror remaining a particularly strong part of his entertainment legacy.

The wider genre has also maintained considerable momentum, with titles including 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Send Help, Hokum and Resident Evil attracting attention in 2026.

A return to 1408 would tap into nostalgia while offering an opportunity to revisit a premise built around one terrifying location.

For now, Room 1408 remains closed on the big screen. But if the sequel report develops into an official production, horror fans could soon have another reason to fear checking into the Dolphin Hotel.
